I am thinking about changing to Shephard SM90's. I know some of this topic has been covered before, but I could not find the posts.
If you have used both, please tell me what to expect in terms of sound and break in period. I need a set of reeds with a better bass sound and more volume, but one that does not take much air.
I have been told the SM90's are better than EZ's. Is this true?

Dave I made the same move a few months ago, very happy with the change. Perhaps a bit more volume, certainly less air, a smoother sound, but rock solid with no adjustments to be made at all - install and forget.

Dave: andynorth is correct, from my point of view, that they are much more user friendly.

Give them a real good listen before you get rid of the ezees. Their sound is very different.

I gave mine to someone else who didn't have the same ear opinions as I do, he seems to just love them.

Try them, but keep the others around for a while until you're sure about the switch.

Oh yeah:
I need a set of reeds with a better bass sound and more volume, but one that does not take much air.

There was a thread discussing low air usage for drone reeds. I remember that the consensus of those who participated in the thread (I not being one of those particpants) was that Selbie drone reeds were putting out very good volume and tone with low air usage. You may want to give them a try as well, if that is a reasonable option for you.

Cheers,

Dain

Dave: For what it's worth from a "newbie", my first set of drone reeds where the original Shepherd plastic. I later replaced them with the SM90's.

I really didn't give the 90's a chance, when I purchased a set of Selbie's. Played them for a while, but found them to be very sensitive at strike in and cutoff. Went back to the 90's and with a little adjustment, I am pleased.

With the Selbie's, I had to give my bag a good hard push to strike in to avoid a squeal. With the 90's, a gentle push gets them going.

My two cents!! FYI: My pipes are Shepherd's
