I just read an e-mail from caubeen, and he has recieved a nasty surprise. After
waiting for a long time, he finally managed to buy a handsome set of pipes that
he saw 3 years ago or so. It is a neat Starck or Starck-based Irish pattern pipe
(2 drones only) and back then was in perfect condition. (I saw pictures - it was
something all right). But today he recieved it via courrier, and found that three
of the ivory ferrules, as well as a stock, are cracked. He is very disappointed and
wishes to know if he can repair it. What is the best way to glue together a crack in
a stock, and is it possible to put together an ivory ferrule with a crack in such a
way as to hide the crack, or at least keep the wood underneath from splitting? :(

Hmm, I'm no expert on this, but my understanding is that it's generally a BAD IDEA to try and glue a cracked stock or fix it yerself unless you really know what yer doing. I don't know about the ivory, but as for the remedy for a cracked stock (aside from replacement which probably won't match), the gospel according to Ringo Bowen is to take it to a reputable shop that specializes in pipe manufacture and/or repair and have the stock sleeved.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

I should probably also mention that Mr. Bowen recommends putting a hose clamp on the stock in question to prevent further cracking until it can be sleeved.

erracht, do your friend a favor and find a shop that can get the repairs done right the first time. There are a few listed on the web... best yet check Bob D's site for just that.

Best of luck,

I know this subject seems like it could go in the expert forum, but we do have a forum that specifically identifies Instrument - so I'll move this thread there.

I hope Experts check that forum too...

If not,we'll work on solving that problem..
