View Full Version : Going to be gone for three weeks...

I'm leaving tomorrow, and I'll be gone for three weeks to a place where I can't bring my pipes. So, for three weeks my pipes are going to sit in my room, unplayed. I know that pipes should be played daily to keep them "healthy". But since this is impossible, how should I store them? Should I leave them assembled, and sitting out in my room, open to the air? Or would it be better to pack them up in their case?
I could use any help I can get.

As long as the temperature in the house stays relatively constant, your pipes should be OK in the case.
About the only thing that I would do is dismantle the hemped sections on the pipes.
Take the drone tops/mid-section off of the pins and separate everything from the stocks.
That way, if there is a large change in the humidity the hemp won’t swell and stick in or split a drone top or lock a drone etc. in a stock.

I habitually run off to the Middle East for six weeks at a time and have to leave my pipes at home. I disassemble all of the joints as recommended above, remove the Kinnaird drone reeds and store them in the box that they came in, make sure that the humidity control devices (Kinnaird Piper's Pal) on my chanter and in my case are toped off with moisture, unzip the bag, and then S-wrap the pipes in a long cloth and place in my case to store in a closet. Never any issues.
I use the time away from my pipes to go through Rhythmic Fingerwork exercises on the PC, and memorize new music on a Technochanter. My favorite is breaking the Technochanter out on the 15-hour plane flights; plenty of practice time there, just make sure you have sufficient batteries.
