The Piobaireachd Society's publication of the annotated Donald MacDonald collection makes for fascinating reading, and not just for piobaireachd lovers. Donald MacDonald was a piper in the Caithness & Rothesay militia, which I think wore the Gordon tartan because there is a fairly well known portrait of their colonel in trews of that tartan. Sorry, I can't put my finger on it right now. Donald MacDonald was also a piper in the Argyll militia and lived for a time in Campbelltown. Can we assume that this militia wore the government tartan (Black Watch)? There was another militia unit from Argyll that wore a different sett of Campbell tartan (I've got a postcard of them somewhere. I bought it at Stirling Castle many years ago.)

If anyone knows any details about the uniforms worn by Donald MacDonald I would be very interested learn more.
