Anyone going to the Worlds in Glasgow next month might be interested in seeing this documentary (http://www.followmirby.com), filmed at last year's event. It could be described as the antithesis of "On the Day", the film that premiered last year (and which is showing again this year).

The College of Piping forms the Training and Development Band composed of adult beginner pipers in order to enter competition at Grade 4B. These are not only Scots, but also foreign students , some of whom have only done internet courses. The rehearsal on the eve of the "Worlds" is the first time many of the members have met each other and their charismatic Pipe Major, Barry Donaldson (veteran of the Strathclyde Police and currently with the Shotts and Dykehead Pipe Band).

The College does not train many drummers and so experienced 'ringers' are recruited from Germany. They are not told, however, that the band's function is not to seriously compete but just to give an encouraging taster of the "Worlds" to musicians that would otherwise remain spectators. On a sodden Glasgow Green, the resulting clash of Scottish humourous pragmatism and teutonic correctness threatens even this modest ambition as the band fight the elements, and themselves, in an effort to make it to the trigger.

The premiere is on Sunday 8th August at the Glasgow Film Theatre (http://www.gft.org.uk) and it screens daily at the Centre for Contemporary Arts until Friday 13th. (CCA tickets available from the Piping Centre).
