How far do you/would you travel to practice with a band? Just curious.

For three and a half years (my how time flies) we've gone two hours each way - usually twice a week - to band practise.

I am lucky .. Alison is now old enough to drive, and she is doing it most of the time .. she is doing this three times some weeks now.. (Tuesday - solo lesson and teach at RMM, Thursday SFU PB practise, Sunday SFU PB practise)

Yep - over 40,000 miles a year, just to band!

We're dumb I think, but we love the organization, the leaders, and the bands..

Sounds like it's time to start something local
Bob, so that in 5 years time when you guys get tired of the all the traveling there will be something local to go to!

I traveled many miles and scrapped many cars
for pipe bands, don't think I'll do again anytime
soon!

I travel to three different band practices a week, four in the summer.

One-Way Distances:

City of Washington:
-- 20 miles, 1x/week (October - April)
-- 38 miles, 2x/week (May - September)

Prince George's Police:
-- 42 miles, 1x/week

MacMillan:
-- 15 miles, 1x/week

Unfortunately, I'm moving in May (yay!!!), but it's 12 miles further out from everything (boo!!).

On the other hand, my commute to work is easy. :)

I travel 50 miles each way - usually once a week. Sometimes twice.

But we've had a piper from Montreal drive 5-6 hours twice a month. Then his car died. We've still got folks from Cape Cod, Connecticut and NH - a fair amount of driving each week to Boston.

In Alberta Caledonia we meet halfway between Edmonton and Calgary. This amounts to a 90 mile drive for all members.

But Buzz Brown has us all beat - he travels from Winipegg to Vancouver for practices. (Travel's no big deal for him though - he's a railway engineer)

I live in Batesville Arkansas and travel by car six hours to play with the band (Oklahoma Scottish Pipes and Drums) in Oklahoma City.

Granted, I only go over about every three months or so. When I do we have an all day session where we play practice chanters and pads in the morning, then do an hour of pipe maintenance and reed checking and adjusting and such, then lunch, then a couple of hours of working on the competition stuff in the afternoon on pipes and drums.

I also send them stuff on cassette so that we're all working on the same thing when I'm not there.

We will probably compete four or five times this year, starting in spring and ending in fall. I'll just meet them at whatever games we're scheduled to play. Worked great last year.
