This has been touched on in the past sort of, but I am asking if there is a hard copy anywhere that describes the duties of Band Officers. D/M, P/M/ D/S P/S etc. We are restructuring our policies and procedures manual as well as our constitution, and would like fact based information. Right now we seem to have someone's "perception" of the duties... We need to get into the current Millenium with this stuff!!

In non-military bands, there is no uniform custom as to these duties and responsibilities. I have seen many variations. It depends most on the style of the P/M and how he/she likes to spread responsibility around.

Carrie,
This does not answer your question directly  , but it is the path my band has followed, and it has worked for us so far.
We have changed our system from a series of non-commissioned officers (PM, PS, PC, DS, DC, etc.) to muscial section leaders. :thumb:
This leaves the section leaders free to concentrate on the music. Of course, they are not left out of the decision making process, as all of the section leaders sit on the executive board, along with other band reps.
Sometimes its just time to get a new apple cart, rather than fixing the old one.
Good luck!!

carrie--
our system was pretty much like what jeff describes, with slight variation. (read "band structure/joke" for reference  .)
be careful, however, in your restructuring: do not trivialise the function of the p/m or d/s--they are the band's musical "drive", and to make them beholden to the board for "permission" on any but major decisions will hamstring the band quite handily. business may be best handled by committee, but you still need a decent product to sell.
