I heard that Omega reeds are the best for soloists and that they use less air, but are they also the best for a band that is struggling with its ensemble sound.
Others recommend the new Shepards or Ezedrone reeds.
I guess on a more basic level is it necessary to standardize the drone reeds within the band?

No reason to standardize on a drone reed unless everyone is playing the same drones.

Omegas sound wonderful and will suit just about any drone, but do require some fiddling to get exactly what you want. Selbie reeds are really good for complete plug-n-play no-fuss setup. Ezees are the workhorse reed and work just about in nearly anything. And so on ...

In short, there's a lot of good options out there. Experiment and find the best drone reed for each pipe (and level of piper).

Your best bet for a grade 4/5 band would be Ezeedrone and Henderson Harmonic.... Omega i have heard are Ok but the do not sound like cane. ( i think thats because of the metal tounge ).
