Does any maker (other than Mark Cushing) make a true countersunk practice chanter? Ok, let me explain:
I've gotten quite frustrated with my current practice chanter. I have a Gibson long poly. Great sound. That's not the problem. The problem is the "countersunk" holes. I bought this chanter because I heard it had great tone (for a PC, and tha tit does) and that it had countersunk holes (which it does not). It has slightly concave areas around the holes, but these areas are nowhere near the size of a real pipe chanter's holes.
My low hand movements are fantastic on the PC, but are not quite up to snuff on the pipe chanter. This has always been the case--which is why I bought the Gibson long poly. It helped some (those concave areas are better than nothing), but I feel I've again reached a plateau. I live in an apartment, so adding more time on the big pipes isn't an option--I can only practice on the pipe chanter a few days a week, whereas I play my PC hours every day.
So who has a true countersunk long practice chanter? I know of Mark Cushing, and I've considered it. For those of you that don't know, he doesn't countersink the bottom hand, he actually drills them completely out to pipe chanter size. Which is great for technique. Unfortunately, it ends up sounding like a fog horn on the low hand because of that. Does any maker actually make a true countersunk practice chanter?
Just curious. Want to get my low hand embellishments near perfect by competition season, which means I need to start soon. And I owe myself a Christmas present anyway.
Thanks! I've posted this in a few of the different forums, since I couldn't figure out exactly which one to put it in. :) :D :)
