Hi there,

A while back on this forum there was a discussion about how far an adult learner could be expected to go, which degenerated into pseudo-medical jargonizing (in which, I regret to say, I was one of the principal participants.)

But I'm still interested in the general idea, so I would be very keen to know the highest level of competition won by a piper who started as an adult (say, at the age of 30 or after).

Maybe someone out there has a few statistics or examples at their fingertips...?

cheers,

Alasdair

I believe that Maureen Connor started in her mid twenties and is now an open level piper...placing well. Although she didn't start in her thirties she one of only a rare few women who have started as an adult and advanced to open level competition. As for gents, I haven't an answer. As for myself...I've done quite well and we'll just leave it at that.

Don't forget Nancy Tunnecliffe! She's an adult learner who competed at the highest levels here, competed in Scotland, competed with the Manchester Gr. 2 band in the 90's, and is one of the most sought after judges and teachers in the Northeast, not to mention one heck of a nice person.

She and Maureen and many others are great examples.
