Hello all you DM's! I'm an open class drummer that was asked to judge the DM contest at the end of the day of a LEGION band only contest. I know nothing about judging DM"s but what's a guy to do, they wanted the event judged and who you gonna ask, a piper? (Why not! They'd know as much as I did!). Not that I'll ever have to do this gig again but could you give me the "Judging DM's for Dummies" version of what to look for? What criteria should be considered? (Mace signals?) I was putting comments like "Nice mace twirling and mace flipping!" on the sheets. I noted that both competitors were out of step during the change from march into slow air so I took the cowards way out and gave them each a 90.45!! Everyone was happy, (It WAS a legion band only contest!) and we all repaired to the beer tent for several libations of pleasure. Anyways guys (and gals) any helpful insights would be much appreciated.

Cheers

PS: For the record, there were two of us, (both open class drummers), asked to judge this event and we told the games co-ordinators and the competing DM's that we both felt unqualified to render any learned opinion wrt to judging this contest competently. It didn't matter to anyone, hence our limited "insightful" comments (and results)on the sheets.

Hey you "fake it til you make it" philosophy seems to be the stand in when all else leaves, I'm just atounded you had a competition for D/M's, Hell that's easier than trying to get a D/M comp here in the South US.

Good thing to make everyone even if you didn't know what you were looking for , all in all I'd say just from hearing what you've told and how the circumstances were you did a good job!!!

Hey why don't YOU learn how to be a D/M , and promote it in your area and then you'll know how??? ( I'm all about everyone learning to be a D/M and the commands of a D/M right now :smokin:

Ya know Scott your suggestion makes alot of sense and if it was anyone other than me, (I couldn't keep a straight face, No disrepect to any DM's intended!) I'd say, "Have at her!" That being said I realize being a good DM is more than just shouting out commands, twirling maces around and puffing ones chest out! (Why couldn't Pammy Anderson have been a DM!!) She would've won the contest hands down!!!

To answer your qeustions

It seems to me your the kind of person to be a Drum Major already if your willing to step up and beyond to the call of what needs to be done for the band  So you are the right kind of person to "Go at her"

And why Pammy isn't a D/M ? Well her chest area would get in the way, and the Judges would be paying attention to her uniform or mace skills anyway!!!!! OH and it does require some thought skills,,,,, :smokin:
