Would anyone here happen to know the year the Scots Guards book, Volume I was originally printed?

I have a hard cover copy with the year "1954" stamped on the front cover, and that seems to be the first edition based on my other copy of this book indicating print dates. However, in looking thru my SG II, 2 issues arise.

The first issue is that the FOREWORD, written by The Duke of Kent, indicates that the first FOREWORD was written "some twenty-five years ago" from 1980. This would go back to 1955. If His Royal Highness wants to take the liberty with a year, who am I to quibble?

The second issue is a little more problematic. Donald Struan Robertson indicates in SG II that "A whole new generation of Pipers has grown up in the Regiment since May 1952 when I was first instructed to compile the original Scots Guards Standard Settings of Pipe Music..."

I guess my question is this: Do I actually own a first edition copy of SG I, with the year "1954" printed on the front cover? Was there an earlier version from 1952, as possibly supported by Struan Robertson's remarks in the preface to SG II?

Thank you one and all for any help in this.

Sincerely,

James Ryan

He says he was first instructed to compile the book in 1952... He never says he finished it in 1952. I'd imagine it took a few years coming... i.e. 1954. So, most probably, you do have a "first edition" Scots Guards. I'm sure if sell it at a Christie's auction, you'll have hundreds of elite business men clamoring to buy it. Good luck being a millionaire. Unless, of course, you can't part with your "SG 1" as it holds to many memories... In that case, now that you've anounced it on a public forum, I'd keep it under lock and key (becuase a lock on its own wouldn't be too helpful for you... your gonna need the key too...). Probably keep a glock or two inside your doorway to fend off the inevitable hordes of crooks. Either way... enjoy.

An original SG book of 1954, in excellent condition, with original 1955 invoice, was sold last night on ebay for GBP 38.00.

Almost same price as a new one.
It's eBay, not Christie's. Elite business men are not there yet. "Retired" should...

You'll have to check the title page to see if it was printed in 1954 or if it's a later edition. It will say so under the title. Mine (hardbound - can't get them anymore) is from 1965, but I do have a '54 copy that's in tatters.

Yes you own a first copy. No there wasn“t an earlier edition.

A sidelight that may or may not be of interest. The price of my 1954 SGI is marked on the cover. CAD$3.00. As it was fairly pricey I remember it came to about US$2.50. When I use the CPI-U to take inflation into account and use 38GBP as its current value, I get a real rate of return of 2.75%/annum. This beats the Dow Jones for that same period. I should have bought every copy J.R. Christie had in stock!

The eBay seller says the original invoice dated 18th Feb. 1955 is attached.

The music for book 3 ended up in a bin.

And what about the announced book 2 of "The Regimental Pipers of the SCOTS GUARDS", due to follow book 1 of year 2000?
Same sad fate (to the bin) as Standard Settings Volume 3?
SAVE THE SCOTTISH REGIMENTS!

I just bought a 1954 SG genuine edition in very good shape found in UK on the Internet (£20.00 - $36.00). It has a hardback cover, 275 pp., J.S. Roe and R. Crabb were the then PM's. A real antique, not for daily practice.
