View Full Version : Over-oiling exterior of pipes?

I had someone e-mail me about oiling his pipes:

"The oil [provided by Naill] was not well absorbed last time [year ago] in many spots leaving a shiny finish looking like a varnish. At the time, I just left it hoping that through use it would eventually dull out or come off. It hasn't. Its not noticable unless you closely examine the pipes.
I want to remove the finish but not harm the wood."

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Andrew

The Naill oil is basically tung oil; it does gum up in the combing if over-applied. I would suggest using mineral spirits and a stiff bristle brush to get off the excess, then WAX the exterior using Renaissance in several applications over several weeks to bring the wood sheen up.

Danish Oil for Naill Pipes. Striaght from the horse's mouth.
