I like the idea of an archive by forum. (option a)
And, it would be good if on the search, you could select, to search the archive or not (to save time)

Hello Bob,
Nice job on the forum. I think you should have General Forums under one, Great Highland Bagpipe under another and so on. The reason is the sub groups under these get all mixed together. What I mean by that is there may be music discussed on the Beer Tent section and if you split it up too much then it will be harder to navigate. The General Forum and Great Highland Bagpipe Forum will run together as well, but if you only have two archives for them I don't think people will mind. Searching 13 is asking too much and would be cumbersome.
The Drummer, Not GH and Highland Dancing will be the easiest to navigate and it will be nice not to have them in the other archives.
Hope I am answering what you are asking.
Enjoy,
Curt
Oh I have one more comment. After you post a message there is no way of just going back to todays active topics. You have to go back to General Forums and then to todays active topics. Could you put a link to todays active topics on the page that comes up after you make a post?
Enjoy,
Curt

Splendid idea Oh Great Master, :D
Option A for me!
:hatoff:
for Curt and Michael (off my original topic I realize - but I wanted to answer)..
It'll be a while before I can look into your suggestion, I'm guesing it will be fairly simple to do.. (a family medical emergency and related travel have just thrown my schedule into a complete panic)
I do have a couple of suggestion in the interim:
1) you can save the url for the Active Topics - and just use that (from your favourties, or..)
2) you can go back three (?) steps in you history too.. (I find I use the Back button a lot here)
Cheers,
Bob

Bob,
I would suggest that archives should follow the original categories. Lumping things together might make retrieval more difficult.

Bob,
First, Thanks for a great resource. Beats the sorry state of a certain Newsgroup by a LONG way.
Second - the archive. I'm new to the group and to piping but know a bit about computing and have even used UBB with some other client installations.
As a newbie to piping I'm trying to avoid asking too many questions that might have already been covered. Truth is though that the volume of material available makes it impossible to not end up asking something that has already been extensively covered elsewhere (as I discover occasionally!).
The answer may be to create another section called "Archive" and to then duplicate the existing forum structure within it. Ask moderators to pick out the cream of their answers, lock them and move them to the archive. Delete the rest of the stuff because if you don't the server performance is likely to start suffering (if it hasn't already!)
Then make a point of getting moderators to remind people to check the archive. Not to stifle conversation but to keep the volume reasonable consistent with server performance.
Be happy to assist to a degree if you need - archiving and rolling stuff over - I know what a total BEAR this can be in time terms. Computers may be fast but human beings still have to check out the data!
