View Full Version : Member location identification?
I'm looking for your views on this.
Currently we allow members to select any member / screen name, and hide their identity if they wish.. but - should we require a real location on their signature line?
(the field 'from' in the 'my profile' and seen when you register)

Bob,
I'm trying to understand the purpose of this. I don't think the suggestion is either good or bad, but I scratch my head wondering about any real benefit.
If someone uses an alias, may they also be inclined not to divulge a real location either?
Will there be some penalty if caught? I believe IP addresses are logged here, right? Doesn't that give a pretty good idea where the user is located?
It doesn't bother me either way....just sounds like an administrative overhead.

It was just a thought I had Shawn.. Maybe a waste of time or effort.. but WTH..
Yes, in answer to your question, it is not too tough for me to identify the location of people.
The idea of asking for people to be a bit specific related to their location came to mind when I saw a post on a beer tent thread - the discussion included EUSPBA and PPBSO judges (if you've been following it)..
A post from an anonymous person (new member, just the one post, no location on the profile) .. a bit pointed - the post.. But the fact is the new member is from Australia  (only I knew that however)
As we know, there is a group of people that want to remain anonymous - and I don't have any real problem with that, but I have been clear that my view is that most identified members don't / won't take the anon. ones as seriously in their posts..
When we have regional discussions, I think the location of a person contributing to a thread often has some meaning, even if the member chooses to be (relatively) anonymous.. In this example, the fact the pointed post came from a person in Australia, and that person chose to hide location and identity.. meant that I don't give any weight at all to the post..

It would be nice to have a complete (and up-to-date) directory of pipers/bands somewhere. So when someone is traveling or moving they could find a local band without too much trouble. Something like that would have been nice the last time I moved. :thumb:

Would that allow for a search for member by Country? Province? State? Institution :humm: ?
Luke,
It is not (ever :sleepy: maintaining the Directory, and there I think we have a pretty good list (?) of bands (web sites)..
And Gord - the new member's directory features added with the software upgrade last month allows searches of all (public) fields of the member records. Pretty cool stuff I think. The 'problem' of course is .. if we search for 'Manitoba' - we see those, but not the 'MB' that some might use (OK.. maybe a poor example.. :D but)..
