View Full Version : New display order for Forums

Another part of the plan / thought is that I will open a few new forums in the not too distant future.

Additionally I wanted to attempt to have the home page display a bit more clearly 'organised'.. (such as it is  I mean)

I know one concern will be the moving of the TP and YA forums from the first view into scroll territory from the home page - BUT, as we grow, scrolling to get to additional Forums is inevitable.. What better Forum(s) to move - I don't think is it possible to have just the most popular forums at the top of the home page display because that 'most popular' list will vary from time to time, and probably differs for each viewer as well.. An Industry News Forum will fit in the new category, as will the Industry Trading Post..

Does a major category of 'Other Instruments +' work for the Other pipes, drumming, and Dance Forums? Or should I leave those alone (for now?) I don't want to seem to put any Forum into a less significant group / place, but I do want to try to keep things sort of sensible .. Our current (well, old now) grouping was a results of attempts to have additional Forums that went away over time..

I'm still curious about the question posed above - does putting the Other Pipes, Drumming, and Dance Forums into a single "Other Instruments +" Category make those forums seem less significant?

In other words, the Drumming, Other, and Highland Dancing Categories would go away, and those 4 Forums would be in a new "Other Instruments +" category.

I'm just thinking of this as a way to make the display a bit more clean, but I don't want to appear to make any Forum less important.

Originally the plan was to have many forums in each of those categories, but the way we have them defined now seems to work well.

Hi Bob,how about something like this....loose "Other Topics" and move "Forum Related" with "FYI" under "Forum Related Announcements"....use a general"Bagpipes" heading and include "Other Pipes" with "GHB"...since "Limited Access" is only for moderators do you need you have that one showing, why not some other unseen access....I would leave both Drumming and Dance on their own though...that`s all I can think of for now......

In other words, the Drumming, Other, and Highland Dancing Categories would go away, and those 4 Forums would be in a new "Other Instruments +" category. That sounds like a decent enough idea. Perhaps though.. Dancers might say "Dancing isnt a Musical Instrument". Someone might possibly say "Drums are not exactly an instrument" .

"Exotic Pursuits" might be a possible name for the catagory. "Cool Category" maybe. " Other Plus.." just has a ring to it, that is not exactly a plus. OTOH Scrolling all the way down BECAUSE one IS that cool & exotic... well that just sounds like fun. Thats my take on it anyway. Maybe one of the "cool crowd" who partake of the other categories might put in an .02..

I've been thinking (scary), and responding to email on this subject too...

I'll leave the 'organisation' as it is for now.. The Dance Category, Drum Category, and Other Pipes - still makes a lot of sense, even though we have few forums there (now)..
