I've noticed a number of threads dealing with wanting to buy/sell/trade things.

Any thoughts on a forum specifically for that purpose? Good idea? Bad idea?

Great timing Ken - I am currently asking the moderators the same question..

A great name was even suggested by a Forum member:
Trading Post

I welcome feedback on this idea..

My $.02 I am forever scrolling through classifieds on other sites. Kinda like window shopping. A classifieds section (piping and drumming) would likely be of great benefit to the forum users. I would feel more comfortable buying something of value (ie pipes) from someone I've "gotten to know" from the forums, than from "fast freddy" on ebay or the like! :bleh:

I also check out classified ads on other sites regarding bagpipes. I would thoroughly enjoy a "Trading Post" on these forums.

Bob,

I think it would be a great idea, if it is limited to personal selling, not a business. Kinda of like what has happened so far in the forum. Also, maybe stipulate that the seller inform you when an item has sold or let them be able to delete the ad. Lastly, maybe a time limit for selling, say 1-2 weeks for the ad?

Otherwise, a great idea! :thumb:

I think this is a great idea too!

But, I wouldnt mind at all having a limited amout of 'business/dealer' activity allowed too, say if someone has a new product they want to tell us about or has a very nice set of used pipes for sale. - after all, it would be on the "Trading Post" forum, and if we didnt want to read it, we wouldnt have to.

For instance, I am glad somebody posted recently about their new product, the Pipe Caddy, because I went out and bought one and it is very nice....and if they hadn't posted about it, I would've never heard of it. Its also fun to look at somethink like a nice set of vintage pipes, and sit there and drool.....

So, maybe you could allow one or two dealer type posts a month or something...

I think the idea is great. I am another person who spends lots of time scrolling through classifieds. I say go ahead. I think the moderators have bee ndoing a great job so far, and I don't see why this wouldn't be successful.

Bob...et. al:

Count me among those who wouldn't mind dealer/manufacturer announcements under certain circumstances.

Specifically...
1) Sales
2) Special deals & offers
3) Objective reviews of new and interesting instruments, components, or accessories.
4) Changes in the "channel" -- new web sites, availability of newsletters, emerging instrument makers.
5) New products, options, enhancements and services.

The danger, of course, is that some pronouncements might lead to ax-grinding -- overt or implicit -- from people who've got them to grind. Such dipwad behavior has been the bane of RMMB and has ultimately caused its degeneration.

This forum, on the other hand, is a model of civilized discourse. Judging by the level and caliber of participation, I have every reason to believe it would remain so.

I say: give it a go.

My two cents...and worth every penny.

A "Trading Post" is a very good idea. Moderating this one might prove to be somewhat of a pain. (MIGHT that is)As long as posters police up after themselves and put in a final post once the item is gone, it shouldnt be too much of a problem. (Once moderator sees final post, the thread is locked up)

As for mentioning new gear, gadgets, and thingamajigs... This would nearly warrant a catagory unto itself. "Newfangled Gadgets & Gear" Any new Gadget on the market would get one shot in the forum to describe the function, usage and virtues of newfangled gadget. Mentions of upgrades, or significant improvements on existing products would also be of use.

Nothing too commercial, just a mention that it now exists, what it does, and where to run off and buy the thing. Anything a Piper or Drummer might play, use or wear.

Great idea but only if the items are good stuff. i.e.Ebay is full of junk and Pakistani pipes.

Yes Stuart,

This will be interesting (heck, it already is)- I'm thinking the level of knowledge of the members of the Forums will ensure reasonable stuff is being sold, or at least we'll see reasonable descriptions of the 'stuff'.

And it just occured to me (duh)- we have the Trading Post - there is probably no need to discuss the idea of having one?..

Closed.
