Was just looking out at the pipeline site to see what was on deck for tomorrow and noticed that they are gearing up for Pipeline being available on demand. That will be very cool for me since I try to record it to listen to later and I am successful about 50% of the time. The file is not out there now but I'm thinking that it will be after tomorrow's broadcast.

pipeline (and other world music related broadcasts) on demand (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/world.shtml?pipeline)

Halleluiah!!! Now I can wait till Monday and hear it at 44 KHz using the T1 connection at work rather than at 8 to 11 KHz on my home dial up service.

Archived events are often stored at a lower sampling rate to save server storage space.

I don't know if this will be the case with Pipeline, but it seems to be with a couple of the other shows on the page.

I'm fortunate enough to be within spitting distance of one of the transmitters which pumps out Radio Scotland so normally Pipeline is a Sunday afternoon ritual around the radio.

However, I missed it Last Sunday so came in to work on Monday and logged on to hear the "on demand" version. The quality is very dissapointing with lots of artefacts and "phasey" things from the compression process. I feel sorry for all of you who have this as your only option for listening to Pipeline.

Perhaps someone with a bit more technical know-how can explain the poor quality. When you're recording or broadcasting a solo piping performance, you need a high sampling rate to do justice to the harmonics which are so much a part of the drone sound. What I heard via the 'net broadcast was spoiled by the compression.

Anyone else got an opinion on this?

Cheers

If a bunch of people were to email and ask for the program to be streamed at 48kHz for a week before being dropped to whatever it is for archiving, it might well happen. The BBC does listen to these requests, even if it can't carry them out.

Cheers,
Calum

For those of you that use StreamBox_VCR to save the RealMedia stream of "Pipeline" to your hard drive the link for the live broadcast of "Pipeline" is rtsp://rmlivev7.bbc.net.uk/farm/*/ev7/live24/scotland/live/radioscotland.ra and the link for the on-demand version is rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/scotland/radioscotland/g2/pipeline.rm Just paste these links into StreamBox_VCR. For some reason the OnDemand version of "Pipeline" also includes the next show, "Take the Floor" so the RealMedia file ends up being about 26Megs for the two shows.

Happy listening,

Dana

Here's a plug for two handy pieces of software that I'm using for Pipeline...

Total Recorder is a program that records sounds through your soundcard and saves them (.wav or .mp3). I've used it to create mp3s from the on-demand pipeline broadcast. You can pick up the software from High Criteria (http://www.highcriteria.com/productfr.htm#prod_TR) . The registration fee is $11.95US.

mp3DirectCut is a program that lets you edit an mp3 file. There are a lot of these programs about, but this one is the easiest-to-use that I've seen, and it's free. I use it to cut the talking out of the pipeline broadcast and break the single 55 minute mp3 into separate track files. You can download this one from Martin Pesch\'s web site (http://www.rz.uni-frankfurt.de/~pesch/)

Happy recording!

Simon

Stormy - I'm calling you on that - where in Paisley can you see Ben Lomond from your bedroom window - Own up - you can't!

I used to live in Alexandria and I DID have a view of Ben Lomond from my bedroom window. Now I live in the USA (Hmmmm). :)

Got to go with Stormy on this one - I come from Paisley originally and there are parts of the town that you will see Ben Lomond - it was sunny once, four years ago, for about 3 minutes and I saw it, honest.

South side, top end of Foxbar. Just below Gleniffer Braes. :bleh:

OK Stormy. After careful research I'll grant you the following:

In the location you describe it is probably possible to see Ben Lomond - and I will take your word for it that you can. If you look down a bit into the Leven valley at the south end of Loch Lomond you can see where I used to live.

HOWEVER....according to the Statutory Instrument 1993 No.2439 (S.248)
The Strathclyde Region (Electoral Arrangements) Order 1993 - you live in Electoral Division 76: Paisley Gleniffer and that is not the same thing as Electoral Division 77: Paisley Central which as a poor misguided Glaswegian from North of the River Clyde was clearly a distinction I missed. "Paisley" was the place low down (so low down it floods most winters when it rains heavily) the blue trains used to stop at on the way to Gourock to get the ferry to Dunoon. Personally I think you should change your profile so that I wouldn't have been misled into making the call on you!

Now that we are TOTALLY off-topic - I assume the radio mast you refer to in an earlier post is the one on the otherside of the Clyde approximately over Kilcreggan - well a wee bitty to the east.

Reference http://www.hmso.gov.uk/si/si1993/Uksi_19932439_en_2.htm

PS - for those that don't get it - the references are all real but I am DEFINITELY being tounge in cheek - no one should get offended. :)

OK its now 45 min past when 8/25's Pipeline should be on demand. I'm demanding it and still getting the World's Straths and marches (heard it umpteen times and enjoyed it). I want to hear the Argyllshire Gathering. How long does it take? The web says thirty min. approx.
When can I hear todays?

This worked great for the last two weeks, but doesn't seem to go anywhere this week. Any ideas on how to get StreamBox working Dana?

Thanks ~ Randy
