I need to update a website but the only method is with FTP. I'm clueless. Can anyone here recommend a good source for 'FTP for Dummies'?

Thanks...

Hi JM,

I've never used anything but FTP for updating web site.. .. I guess I am a bit curious what you have been using?

But - the software I have used for many years is WS FTP Pro - they have a shareware / evaluation version too AFAIK.

http://www.ipswitch.com/

It can be setup to look very familiar if you're a windows user, I think you'll find it very easy to use..

Cute FTP is another good one. I flip back and forth between the two, for no reason. I guess it just depends on my mood and what I want to deal with at the time. Cute also has a free trial.

I have used Ipswich ftp le, I changed to ftp pro, but to be honest I don’t find it much better than the free le, so I would go for that.

Nothing. I dabbled in FrontPage like 4 or 5 years ago but that's it. I don't even know where to start...I can design multi-million dollar buildings in a few days but can't do FTP...go figure...

With a good website design sw (like Dreamweaver) comes always an build-in chooser for http or ftp upload.
I do it always via ftp (more secure on the server side if right configured).

I use Dreamweaver and use CuteFTB as a backup. Every once in wile something does not go through using Dreamweaver but does using CuteFTP.

Free trial CuteFTP available at: cuteFTP (http://www.cuteftp.com/cuteftp/)

If you want something very simple and you're a windows user. Use Internet explorer. and just click and drag the files you want to upload etc... it's just like using explorer to copy files.

just type in IE: ftp://"username":"password"@ip address"/"folder"/"folder"/

disregard the ""

I have always used the ftp utility that came with my coffeecup html editor.

I recently switched to http://www.modhost.com/ They have a sweet control panel, that allows you to upload and edit files from the control panel. I will probably never use an ftp program again. (well sort of, im technicaly using their ftp program on their computer)

Ah, you young whipper-snappers! Back in 1862, when I was young, we had FTP too, but it wasn't File Transfer Protocol, it was Files To Post and it was the "out" basket on my desk, then to the Post Office when one of the eunuches would come along and take 'em. . . no, or was it Unix? I forget at my age.

'Puters make it too easy for you younins, you don't even have to do the FTP "put" and "get" commands anymore, just drag yer rat—er, mouse—whatever the hell that thing is—and and drop the icons and zippitty-doo-dah, it's sent off. No eunuches or nuthin. We didn't need rats when we had eunuches.

Yer all a bunch a' lazy [Edited by moderator], good for nuthin', boot lickin', [Edited by moderator] now!!

Aye, those were da days . . . betcha don't even know what 'chmod' is, do ya? eh? Do ya?

Andrew

Hi JM,
Here are two ftp programs that I use and find pretty good.
Right FTP is free.
FTP Explorer requires a licence if it is used for anything other than home or non commercial use.

Cheers,
Ronan.

FTP Explorer (http://www.ftpx.com/)

Right FTP (http://www.right-soft.com/rightftp/)

Oooooh Andrew...
I use CHMOD, put, and get almost every day... I've thought about upgrading to one of the drag'n'drop thingies but right now I'm happy with what I have now.

You don’t need chmod with mysql, is that not a bit old fashioned now?
