The Piobaireachd Society of Antigonish

Press Release
May 2, 2004

The 15th Annual ACPBA Piobaireachd Challenge was held in Antigonish on Friday evening, April 30th. Since it was first held in 1990, this competition has proven to be one of the highlights of the season for pipers from across the Maritimes. Over the past fifteen years, the event has also attracted competitors from across Canada, the US, Scotland and Australia.

Each competitor is asked to submit one or more tunes from the lists set for the Silver and Gold Medal competitions held annually in Scotland. The lists change every year, which means pipers must frequently change their competitive repertoire. A Piobaireachd, the classical bagpipe music of the Highlands, can take anywhere from seven minutes to over twenty minutes to perform and is considered to be the supreme test of a piper’s ability.

Sponsored jointly by the Atlantic Canada Pipe Band Association and the Antigonish Highland Society, the Piobaireachd Challenge has been held in Antigonish annually since 1990 and has been hosted by the Piobaireachd Society of Antigonish since 2000. Contest convenors for 2004 were Brenda Riley, President, and Kaye MacGillivray, Secretary of the Piobaireachd Society of Antigonish. Stewards were Rick Crawford, ACPBA Chief Steward, and Scott Williams, Antigonish. The judges this year were Peter Aumonier of Hamilton, ON and Bruce Gandy of Dartmouth. Antigonish Highland Society President Mr. Bob Murray presented the awards. In addition to those first place prizes listed below, second and third place AHS medals were also presented.
