My thoughts on the Grade 3 contest at Alma this weekend - Atlanta - definitely on the upswing. I heard them three or four years ago - I suspect that was a low point for them. Not so anymore - WOW what a difference. Good balance, good piping, nice contribution from the drums. (Not alot of technical fireworks, but not distracting either in my opinion.)

My surprise in Grade 3 for the weekend? Macalester College's midsection (Bass & Tenor). Very tasty. Very well established. Nice overall sound and nice balance to look and sound. Keep at it folks!

McComb Memorial was solid in Grade 4 - well done. As I recall the Saturday performance put you in the prize list and Sunday's took it. Good job!

Now get back to practicing...

Hey You Who Has Yet To Be,

You were surprised?!?! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/shocked.gif What did you expect?!?!?

Seriously, thanks for the kind comments...they're especially appreciated coming from an experienced midsection guy such as yourself (and I won't even blow your cover!)

I was great seeing ya again over the weekend. Best of luck for a successful season!

Cheers,

Joe

Thanks, He. To echo Joe, it was nice to see you again in the beer tent.

I'd like to make sure that everyone knows that those nice sounding tenors were made by our bass drummer, Steve Biggs. Some of you out there may know of him as Steven Biggs of Wellington from the fine hornpipe written by Mike Kotch that several Midwest and Australian bands are currently playing. Biggsy is actually from Napier. He is currently working on a bass drum which I am sure will sound just as good as the tenors that he has already made...but deeper, I hope. :thumb:

Congratulations to all of the winners at Alma, but especially to Steve Biggs, Joe Hickey, Carlton Macy and Greg Coulter, our midsection. They call themselves "The Old Gray Line" and they've won best bass at Alma for the last five outings (Saturday and Sunday). It was a good weekend and I'm still worn out from the 13 hour drive. See you next year.

I guess it is easy to make fun of my little 13 hour jaunt, especially when all you had to do was sit in a bus and sleep on the way home. :sleepy:

Hey, does anyone have any good alma pics? Also, no one in our band managed to get any of the band so if there are any floating out there we'd love to see them.
Thanks,
Jason
