I listend to this latest release from Michael Grey over the last 3 days. I have to say that I like it.
To me, the CD is very much in the style of groups such as Afro-Celt Sound System or Enigma (but with bagpipes). A more or less continuous performance with no pauses between tracks. Guest vocals by a number of people including Jane Siberry. In various places throughout the recording, the pipes do not take center stage, but allow the other instruments and vocals to take priority and rightly so. A refreshing approach to our genre which usually sees the pipes as the only focal point in most recordings.
The Indian/ middle eastern influences are strong, and I found that the rhythms complemented each other quite well , and the pipes and other instruments used, blend very well together.
The performances were both energetic and soothing at the same time, which is a difficult feat to achieve.
I give it a thumbs up and consider it a must have for anyone wishing to expand their horizon beyond the traditional.
