Hey I just want to find out if anyone here has tried andante beaters, How do they hold up, and what density of foam they use, I have tried many beaters that are too soft.

Has anyone compaired them with twisted thistle?

I have to make a decision soon, so any input will be greatly valued.

Thanks for your time and effort.
Matt

Hi Matt
I'm pretty sure that Steve Foley of LA Scotts, for one, uses the Andante mallets...and with great results. As with any stick, it really boils down: to your preference of balance; how your drum is set up; and the sound you're trying to get.
Cheers
Mike

p.s. Sandy, do you accept liquid commissions? :smokin:

twisted thistle sticks are made from the skulls of former death row inmates.
Do you need any other reason to buy them.

Twisted Thistle is people.... it's PEOPLE!!

And yes, Steve Foley does use Andante bass mallets with our Band. He won the Grade II worlds bass title in 1997 with them and then snatched up the Grade I worlds bass title in 1999 with them. Many bands here on the West (US) Coast play them... assumedly (and in many cased admittedly) based on Steve's success in producing a solid tone and signature punch.

I'll add to this thread that bass drum mallets are a means to an end. A bass drummer needs proper, efficient, and effective technique, a well-tuned drum using appropriate head selection and muffling methods and more than any of the above... an internal sense of time and - even more difficult to acquire - a natural feel for the music.

In an article by Jimmy Stewart some years ago in the International Pipe Band Drummer Magazine -- (paraphrasing) 'I can set up my drum and give it to someone else along with my mallets and everything and it still won't sound like me.'

That statement is true of all championship bass drummers (the names of whom are too numerous to try and mention here) ... each of them have their own style, sound, feel, groove and all the things that make them **musicians** and the heart of the band.

Thanks alot everybody for your replies.

I would love a pair of twisted thistles, but when you gotta convert every thing back to Rands (our currency) and when you are a student with a tight budget, well what can I say.

I doubt that there is anyone out there wishing to sponsor me a pair of sticks? Ha ha only kiddin.

I will carefully think about what each and every one of you have said and I will speak with my pipe major aswell.

Thanks again

Matt
