This year they've made it so that they announce the best bass section for every grade in the PPBSO competitions.. Although there has only been one competition so far (Georgetown) I was wondering how they decide who wins best bass. I noticed that the bands that won best drumming also won best bass.. do they just use whomever wins best drumming wins best bass?? also, I was wondering who does decide who wins, the drumming judge or the ensemble judge... just some stuff that I’ve been wondering :)

I overheard the drumming judge getting instructions (in Georgetown) on this from the Chief Steward. The drumming judge and ensemble judge decide on best bass together.

I wish the EUSPBA would do that. Here in the Northeast at least. Right now there are NO contests in New England that offer a bass or tenor contest. The ONLY one (that I know of) in the Northeast is at Capital District, which is a 6 hour drive.

My midsection has to justify becoming a member of the EUSPBA to compete at ONE games. That blows.

If the EUSPBA at least asked the games comittees to announce best bass and best midsection, at least there would be SOME recognition for them.

Andrew,

Is New Hamshire not having B + T this year?

Actually - if you check out the rules, I believe the "Bass" is a section award. As Jeremy points out this is to be determined by the drumming and ensemble judge together.

Because it is a section award, it can easily mean that a tremendous bass player will not be recognized because they have lame tenors to work with. At the same time, a fantastic tenor section may easily not be recognized because the bass drummer is lame.

This recognition works as far as it goes. Unlike other instruments you really don't have a way of measuring yourself against other players in grades above (or below) you band's grade. Sorry - the line dance does not count. HOWEVER - it is a great way to get a little extra beer money! :thumb:

And yes, Brain. I contacted the NH Highland Gamesand they are NOT offering a bass or tenor contest this year.

Andrew, the question was directed at PPBSO contests.

I'm still missing.
