Battlefield Band now have a MySpace presence.
Battlefield Band on MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/thebattlefieldband)
Presently there are two tracks from their new recording, "The Road of Tears," to enjoy. The second one is a cracker of a pipe set. Give it a look/listen!

Scott,
Do you know how long Mike Katz has been playing with "The Batties," and perhaps more history on him prior to joining the Band?
Thanks

Mike's been with them since Iain MacDonald stepped down in late 1997. Prior to that, he played with another fine Scottish band, Ceolbeg. He also has played with various pipe bands, including Scottish Gas, and I believe he spent a season or two with one of the bagad bands in France.
Mike was raised in southern California and started piping at age 10. He went to study at Edinburgh University and has lived in Scotland ever since.
His solo album, "A Month of Sundays," was released on the Temple Records label last year, and is well worth buying (in my humble, unbiased opinion) :)

Thank you, Scott. Very informative post. I've several of the Ceolbeg recordings in my library, so will look at the liner notes again.
I'll also check out "Month" some time soon.
Kindest regards

I believe Mike's only recording with Ceolbeg was on the album called "Five." Prior to that, Gary West was their piper. Gary re-joined the band when Mike went to the Battys, until they disbanded, and is now the host of BBC's "Pipeline."
Ceolbeg\'s web site (http://www.ceolbeg.com) is still in place, and has a more comprehensive history of the band, the various members over the years, mp3 samples, etc.

I was just listening to "Rain, Hail or Shine" again the other day. I still get misty-eyed when I hear Davy Steele's voice. Did Mike go to BB before Davy left Ceolbeg, and then perhaps the rest of the lads said, "Hello, Mr. Steele. We're in the market for a guitarist/lead vocalist/bodhran player, and Mike thought you might be interested!"?
Thanks once again, Scott.
