Whew, certainly this is the slowest I have ever been in responding to the excellent suggestion of a new forum:

Thanks to the Pipe Guy and others!
For the discussion of Teaching.

Great to see a teachers forum. I have been asked to assist with the new pipers in our band (while I'm on injured reserve) and I'm sure there will be some excellent suggestions coming my way through this forum.
Thanx ......... :thumb:

I firmly believe that there are those amongst us who are MORE disposed to teaching than others, for a variety of reasons and not necessarily because of an individual High playing standard (Although it is of some assistance)
This should hopefully start the ball rolling

I normally start at the top of the page and work down through the Beer Tent to the Moderator section. Then 'pring' Teachers Lounge. How have I missed that then? Oh. Its only just started. Good one. :thumb:

John Yes, and unfortunately there are those amongst us who are LESS disposed to teaching than others, but who have been asked to help out anyway!
I had no idea that this forum was getting started, but our new pipe students will thank you all as I hopefully learn better ways to do something I would LIKE to do, but which I don't feel I've got the "right touch" to do well at this point. And I'm not going to even touch the part about Individual High Playing Standard and the lack or sufficiency thereof!!

Not true, RosieJ . . . I've had the pleasure of being your student a couple of times at band practice and you are an excellent teacher. Your technique is solid and you are patient and open-minded. You also go looking for the answers to student's questions if you don't know the info. If you continue to approach teaching this way I'm afraid you'll only have to do more of it!!! :thumb: :hatoff:

If you can put it across you are a Teacher. We are all part of a moving machine and all are important to it's running.
Students our future
Soloists our inspiration
Teachers our neccessity
And all the other bits in between

Well, this is timely. I just volunteered to do some teaching for our band so I'm gonna need all the advice I can get I reckon!
I started by getting a copy of Jim's book (Rgythmic fingerwork) as there's no proscribed band tutor (yet), not to teach from but to improve *my* technique!
THis is great!

My teacher and I began a college continuing education course (or as our crack campus police faculty badge typist spells it, CONTININGING) I had the inspiration when I was asked to teach a couple of folks locally. When I finally convinced Macomb Community College here in Michigan to let us start a course, they laughed at us. However, first semester 15 students (many of which are still with us and about to get up on the pipes) second semester 20 students, last semester 17 students. There is a desire, a need, and we have filled it. My teacher is Grade 2 and teaches the more advanced I am Grade 4 and teach the beginners. As I say, I may not be the best piper around but I am a very good teacher. I have patience and I am new enough that I remember some of the things that vexed me when beginning.
I have copies of some Cadet Excercises from Canada and several other excercise sheets. I am glad you reminded me of the Fingerwork book. I will order it and have our students order it as well.
