Chanter Reed Problems

I am new to piping and am having trouble with the chanter reed squeeling and sometimes shutting down. I try to increase and decrease pressure and this does not seem to work. I warm the chanter up by playing it briefly before putting it into the bag chanter stock. How do you know when a reed is 'bad' or worn out? Thanks for helping this novice. Any Chanter Reed 101 will be appreciated.
