Biggest Difference between Pipers and Drummers?
Drummers know how to use their sticks
Drummers know how to keep the beat
Drummers know how to march and play
Drummers can also stand at attention and play
But Pipers Just DRONE on and on!!!!!
PS Drummers wear cooler shades too

I was going to make some rude and snide remarks about pipers and drummers both, but I can't I have friends in both worlds. I'm a drummer. started in Piano and picked up drumming, loved it!!!!
Besides some of my best friends are pipers, and even in college I tried piping but I was drunk and was confused between piping or drumming, we've all been there I'm sure.
Although I may not approve of thier lifestyle choice , I certainly support their right to do it,,,,,,,,,,,,, :smokin:

So you learnt to play the pipes AND drums, at the same time, when you were drunk at college?
That's some college.

Pipers are muscians.
Drummers detract from the glory of pipers.
Pipers are cool.
Who hires just a Drummer for a funeral?
Pipers twirl fluffy things on sticks.
Pipers can hold their instrument AND play it at the same time while walking in beat while counting.

Drummers (while being admired and worshiped by women and goddesses alike) just smile knowingly while geeky pipers run around like Chicken Little trying to convince everyone how "cool" they are. :D

Face it pipers, no matter how much we try to tell them, drummers just don't understand that they are, and forever will be, inferior forms of life. We might as well just let them go on believing they're the best, since that makes them happy, while we just smile because we know the truth.

I guess when it comes to opinions, drummers "beat" it to death and pipers "drone" on and on.

Let's see......
Two hand, two sticks, one note, beat with both hands. Seems easy enough.
Seriously, recruiting new drummers seems to be a whole lot harder than recruiting potential pipers.

Yeah, imagine at the World Drum Band Championships, all the drum majors going "Drums up...drums and pipes, by the left, quick march", then, with the drummers leading, the band forming a circle, with the bass piper moving into the middle of the circle, and some of the drummers playing beautiful harmonies in the slow air...making sure the cut off at the end is clean, with no harnesses sounding...

Come on Cliff......you really think there are any pipers listening to Dave Brubeck's "Take Five"?

Terry, I'd be willing to bet they've all heard it, but just lack what it takes to appreciate it. :)

Tommy,
One would have to be DEAD to not appreciate "Take 5". I heard it this weekend while catching a few minutes of the movie "Pleasantville" and was thinking: There are a limited number of examples of pure perfection on this earth -- that tune is definitely one!
Then again, maybe starting out as a drummer gives me a different take on it.
See you at Stone, Tommy :hatoff:

We need drums
There great for resting our bagpipes on while we drink. Without them, the world would fall apart.

I was a drummer before I started piping.
That's like having a lobotomy reversed! :D
The sad truth for us all is that pipers need drums to set the beat.
We know the drum major usually sets the wrong tempo.............
And I have found that drummer listen for cues from the pipes, right or wrong.
In fact, I went on a nice stroll through the park with a couple of our drummers the other day.
I said "Look! A dead bird!"
They both looked up in the sky and said "Where?"

Every one nows that the drummers are only there to keep the rain of off pipers and to give pipers a laugh when they are not playing there best. (well they are the reason for most mistakes aren they not???)

Well, now I'm irritated....I LOVE Take Five, and the reminder of it has that song going through my head. I will probably be humming it for a week. It is irritating to have one constant song going through my head like this for a week!
One of the best things I have heard in years was at Winter Storm in Jim Kilpatrick's session. The topic was when PMs try to tell the drum section what to do, and they really have no idea what they are talking about. Jim said, "Just smile and nod and treat them like the children they are."

lets put an end to all this!!
the fact is
pipers need drummers to keep the beat!
but without pipers it would not be a PIPE BAND!
all to say that without each we are useless

As a bass drummer, the only reason I ever get anyone to tie my shoe-lases, is because I never learnt how to.
