This is great stuff. I know they sell Winter Storm cd's, but I'd be up for buying a DVD for performances like this.

Bah, humbug... It's nonsense... A bunch o' showoffs. No music. Look's like a freak show. Can barely even hear the piper. Next we'll see these guys wearing nothing but a tenor drum, just to get a laugh. I wonder if they could snort maple syrup up their nostrils as they "drum"... I'm sure they could resort to all manner of "tomfoolery", yet if they could compliment the pipe music with tasteful drum accompaniment - that would be radical.
Now, I'm sure all these guys can do that just fine (tasteful drum accompaniment, that is) - as they do in their band settings. But this nonsense here should be saved for the ceilidh. The concert hall is for music, not maniac tenor drummers running up and down the isles. I certainly wouldn't want to hear this garbage on a CD. It's just noise - blocking out some quality pipe music. Is this what it takes to keep people coming back year after year? I'm sure the Rockville High School Pipe Band (my former band...) could put on a far "crazier" show than this, if this is what everyone wants to hear. You don't need to be a professional to lay on the ground and do a couple of push-ups... Do we need a piper with a Gene Simmons-esque tongue to attract an audience? White facepaint and animal butchery must be next...

TLITC.....It would appear from your above comments that you were not there. Many of us where and got to see and hear first hand the class and musicianship of these performers. We were there to hear fantastic music, and to be entertained. Believe me, we experienced both.
Perhaps you'd like to make a large donation to the MWPBA and MHAF to enable them to record performances with professional media equipment so you (who I remind was not there) could hear the piper in a featured TENOR DRUM performance. (it was not meant to be "drum accompaniment")
Why stop there??....donate to the RSPBA as well and maybe they'll do the same...for the next World Championship DVD. I could hear the piper just fine...and enjoyed the hard work exhibited by all involved.
Did you know that (many of if not all of) the featured performers taught for 8 hours and were scooped away with no break to play at a benefit dinner and then returned to perform for another couple of hours? I bet not. Did you know that the majority of them spent the day prior (some 11 hours or more with little to no break time) judging? I bet not....These people put their heart and soul into what they do.
I think the energy and thought they put into entertaining us after such a gruelling day should be commended, not criticized.
I say "kudos" to the person who recorded the clips to share with us. It's not easy to do when you are trying to watch the show in front of you. Thank you for sharing.
TLITC If you don't want to hear the performance on CD, suggest you don't buy it. I certainly plan to.
It's sad to hear criticism of the efforts of others....

I thought the video clips were great fun. Not all "concert stage" performance needs to be done in a serious manner.
These are some of the world's best pipers and drummers assembled on this stage. They can certainly "let their hair down" and have some fun, especially in front of an audience that consists mainly of other pipers and drummers. If the entire show was like this, then I'd have a different view of it all. But it's a first rate concert/recital, with a bit of fun thrown in.
If it's not your cup of tea, that's fine. But it shouldn't be cause to criticize the audience that does enjoy a bit of fun. It certainly sounds like the crowd ate it up.

Hmmmm....six of the best musicians that ever played this music on stage having a bit fun, and it was a "freak show"?
A little comedy interjected in a three hour show that featured some of the finest music ever played was, in my opinion, refreshing. :)
Oh, and it wasn't a "concert hall", it was a church.
I'll be among thousands who will try to be the first to own a permanant recording of the event.

I saw a lot of filming in the concert, are those cameras private or MHAF? Will there be a DVD of WS2006?

My understanding is that they are private. Unless I am mistaken there are no current plans for a DVD. The cd will sure be awesome though!

What is the first tune Headmaster Cusack is playing with the 3 tenors?

oh well, too bad...can't expect everything.
I would LOVE to see a video made of Winterstorm (competitions and/or concert) though, what makes most of the drumming (and some piping) so amazing to most audiences (except for TLITC)is the visual part, I can't help but get a little frustrated with the WS CDs because I don't know why the audiences are cheering or laughing (that's why I came this year so that I can see for myself). That being said, I'm definitely going to buy the CD.
BTW, would anyone who filmed the concert this year mind giving me a copy of their video so that I can be amazed again?
Now, all that I can say is that there is a reason why everyone (pipers and drummers, experienced or not) who's been to this concert love it, TLITC. Also, unless you can pipe or drum better than the performers, I suggest you to be quiet.

I asked The Captain Ken Eller about a DVD, and apparently it comes down to the production cost, versus the relatively limited market.
Hhmm... when I see that I can pick up a video of my kids performing a ballet show for a relatively reasonable sum, and that's an even more limited audience, you would think it would be feasible...
Anyway, that said, the concert was absolutely fantastic. The crowd went wild for the drum core performances (and not just for the tenors). Multiple standing ovations, and all well deserved. Some serious playing, mixed with some serious fun, and the audience lapped it up. Boy, was it hot in there though :bleh:
This was my first trip to WS, although I do own the previous CDs, and preordered the latest when registering. The concert and the party afterwards were great, with some superb competions. You know, I even managed to learn some things at the workshops.
If anybody did catch more samples on video, I'd love to see it posted. Seeing the 3 Tenors and Fish Fry brought the memories right back.
Thanks!
Stuart.

This question comes from the ever-so-lovable Jimmy Ryan...
Love ya, man! I, too, was put off by such comments from someone who did not even attend. No one that I know, that was there, would have the same views as TLITC.
I come away a better musician and a better person every year I attend the Winter Storm workshop and concert. I enjoy the depth of character and the talent that these musicians share with so many.
Hats off to everyone who helps make Winter Storm happen every year. :hatoff:

Apologies. I do realize that it's a lot different not being there... without the energy of the concert and all that. And its much easier to see the humor in something if they know the people involved. Having not been there, I clearly spoke out of line. I think I'm done with this posting business...

I asked Jeff Kruske about that at the Winter Steam party, and his reply was, "We're working on it, we'll have to see if it works" (or other words to that effect, if I recall correctly, hopefully my ears weren't clouded by wishful thinking). So, there's hope if the video gods smile upon MHAF. Somehow, my boys have got to see this!

Great Thread,
To get the DVD done correctly we need a donor or sponsor who will provide $8,000. If you know of a corporation or individual who can provide this have them contact me. The company that record the CD are of the highest quality so we are fine there.
Thanks

I would certainly buy a DVD of the concert and the competitions if it were made available. Hopefully something can work out so it can be enjoyed again and again! :68dance:

After last year's concert, I asked around about the prospect of making a DVD and what it would entail. The response I got was that to put out a decent DVD, get a few grad students who need to do this sort of thing from the local university. Let them set up all their cameras and so forth and let them "have at it". It would be free for the MHAF. Then, when their grading is done for their project and they've aquired their MFA (Master of Fine Arts) or what-have-you, then the MHAF can have it to sell. Since it's non-profit all the way (grad school plus the MHAF) it should be fine.
Now, having said that, I'm not from out there, I have absolutely no knowledge of what MFA programs are available out there or even if there would be interest from a student's point of view for actually doing this.
In the meantime, I'll keep flying out and buying the CD and live on the memories! :)

You know, I was kinda heartened to hear that the cost would only be 8 grand. In the broad scheme of things, that isn't that much......I wonder if we could ponder ideas/sponsors to come up with this for next year.
I for one, as a first time attendee, was totally floored by the talent, energy, and fun --- it's great when people at that level can have fun and inspire us all. It had the energy of an excellent rock concert with the quality of the best in the world. Who could want more, and I most certainly would pay a hefty sum for a DVD of the event (but, I guess I can't shell out 8k alone!)
