I started wondering about this last night...

....I was in Scotland for a wedding back around April 22, 1994. Near Stonehaven, at a placed called Muchalls Castle. This was years before I started piping. There was a solo piper who'd been hired to play before and at the wedding - at the time he seemed to me to be a very good piper. He played for quite a while down in the outdoor courtyard, and then some inside too.

Just curious - might that piper have been someone who is a forum member?

Cheers,
Doug

I want to know how long to took you you to get use to playing the pipes? Also If you have any advice for me.

It's been more than three weeks and I can only play a line before I mess up. I can play all three dones by them selves consistently no problem but my breathing rhythm gets all screwed up when I try to play a tune, even if all my drones are capped. Sometimes I forget which note to play next. It frustrates me because I can play the song perfectly by memory on the practice chanter and the loud chanter detached from the bag.

My long distance friend, Ross, pointed this out to me yesterday, and as he hasn't yet made the announcement on the forum, I'm going to steal his thunder!

As many know, an archive of recordings of P/M Robert Reid was acquired by the College of Piping in Glasgow and they produced one commercial CD based on that collection. It was announced on the College website that the collection has been sold to the Piobaireachd Society with the intent of making the music available on line to members.

Given Reid's reported antipathy to the Piobaireach Society, this is ironic, but the Society of 2012 is not the Society of 1930.

Guess I'll have to renew my Piobaireachd Society membership.

I'm a 7-month beginner, and have just gotten to the point where I can play simple airs on the pipes.

I'm having trouble getting my Redwood drone reeds to play nice with my Husk easy chanter reeds in my MacCallum P2 pipes. It's hard to strike them in without sounding the chanter. I haven't been able to find a happy place on the bridles where I don't blow out the drones, or sound the chanter when striking in. I also have trouble with the drones trailing unless I REALLY "drain the bag" when stopping.

I can now blow strong enough to overblow my easy reed "easily". Should I go to a medium so that setting up my drones gives me more room to accomplish better strike ins and cutoffs.

Ian Campbell, a piper and policeman, was killed in the line of duty in 1963 in a notorious case that became the basis of Joseph Wambaugh's "The Onion Field" book. I wandered across this memorial website today, while looking for online updates to the "Onion Field" case. I reread the book not long ago, and watched the film for the first time in quite awhile. The LAPD has done well to keep his memory alive.

http://lapespipesanddrums.org/?page_id=14

The video clip embedded here (also on YouTube in its own right) gives a lot of new information about Campbell's piping background. This forum's own Iain Sherwood was a winner of the Ian Campbell award back in the 1960s.

The video also raises some new questions, such as, are those Ian Campbell's own bagpipes shown in a color photo (presumably in the possession of his heirs), with what seems to be a Cameron of Erracht bag cover? The B&W photos (and the book) indicate he played Henderson pipes with evidently a Campbell of Argyll tartan bag cover. What is the status of these pipes today, and does anyone else in his family play?

This sad story has long interested me. I first encountered "The Onion Field" while I was myself learning the pipes and Ian Campbell's story was an inspiration to me to work hard and be worthy of the instrument.

I'm organizing a gig for an Olympic kick-off party and I think this would be spot on. Thanks!

I saw this photo on a site about the Ellis Island Tartan Day event.

I went through all the photos on the site and couldn't find another photo of the same band.

I searched through some sites of NY area bands and couldn't find any bands wearing this tartan, which appears to be a variant of the University of Glasgow tartan.

Anybody know what band this is? What tartan that is?

Thanks! Richard
