Parting Glass, 2nd part

Yes, this tune again.

A students wants a pipe version of the version that starts F E | D B B LA and not the D D C B LA LA.

I have listened to dozens of mostly but not only Irish singers, and many instrumental settings, and hear five or six different versions of the first two bars of the second part.

I simply have no expertise in this Irish (or maybe Scots) tune, though I never tire of hearing a nicely done version. So far, most of the Highland pipe versions have been substandard for a variety of reasons.

So, is there a good musical rendering of the first two bars of the second part? Or not? I worked out one which followed a couple of Irish singers.

F | HA F-HA HA. F | HA F-HA HA. F | HG F E D | E. LA-LA etc. with a harmony behind it. But were my sources just doing their own thing, as many singers are wont to do. Or is there a GOOD and musical version?

My student musters out of the army soon, and he wants to play this for his unit at his leaving gathering.

Thanks!

IDF? Is pipes at a demobilising march out ‘common’ ? Do the IDF Hava a pipe band?

Yet another tune that's just one note out of reach for all of us who don't pinch out a high B like Klondike, though you could play it in Amin with C and F naturals...

Anyways, looks like you're blending the Bmin with bits of the Amin version. That's supposed to be an F before the two low As, not an E. Throw this into an ABC renderer if you want the dots. Scale is GABcdefga (and high b) and slashed notes are cut down from the default quarter notes to eighth notes.

Thanks. I don't really know the tune, and like most traditional western melodies, no one else does, either.

Makes me not wonder at the very not nice Highland pipe versions I heard or saw in notes.

Personally, I am happy with piobaireachd minimalism.

Cheers!

This version starts on a D so the second part can start up on HA.

*Note: in this recording they start with the second part as a sort of into.

"Video not available" notice. Maybe Western Asia is not a permitted zone.

This is maybe like the Irish Guards version.
D D c B LA LA

Which is fine, but really not the same melody. More a march tempo, too. Not like the slow, sad song. But cheers

Yeah, that's how it starts,

It might be worth trying to find it on a streaming service or something- Brian Boru playing it with the Ne'er Do Wells. They're playing it as an Air, it's on their 50th Anniversary album.

Best of luck!

Wait, this might be easier, here, I just recorded it-

Listen to Partying Glass by James Moyar on #SoundCloud

Hopefully that's helpful. If not, still, best of luck, friend!

*Note: Autocorrect made it, "Partying Glass," and I left it cause I liked it...

Re: Parting Glass, 2nd part

I play it on uilleann pipes, along with our singer, in our band.

It's no mystery how that song goes, it's common enough.

Here's the beginning of "the 2nd part" with my uilleann fingering transposed to the equivalent GHB notes (with ornaments melismatic notes etc left out)

F# HG HA HB HA

F# HA HB HA F# HG HA

F# HG F# E D E F# E

Yes those pesky High B's!! (Every time I see Kenny McLeod I pester him about putting High B keys on McCallum chanters.)

Re: Parting Glass, 2nd part

Odd still how many Irish singers sing those first few bars so differently. But in any event, thanks all. Back to piobaireachd. The entirety of Lament for the Children fits perfectly on the pipes! Amazing.

Lesson for all of us in that.

Cheers.
