Searching for tunes with a High-B note

I just purchased a set of smallpipes with an extra keyed note that plays high B. Now all I've been doing is trying to think of some tunes with that high B. All I have come up with are a few Christmas carols and religous hymns. I can't seem to think of any traditional tunes. Any ideas?
Many thanks.

In theory any tune that has a B, can be used as a High B instead. In theory. Some tunes may work better than others, some maybe not so much.

Re: Searching for tunes with a high B note

While I do have a smallpipe chanter with a high B key, most of these tunes I play on my John Swayne border pipe which can go up another half octave above high A; however these tunes on cursory inspection stop at the high B.

I can point you in the direction of sheet music if you need assistance. They're not all Scottish tunes (most aren't). Many of them must be transposed up from the keys the other traditions (e.g. Irish) play them in. ABC notation and the program EasyABC are your friend.

Mo Ghile Mear
MacArthur Road
Comin' Thro' The Rye
Give Us a Drink of Water (has a high C but substitution should be easy enough)
Paddy Cronin's
Pipemaker's Hornpipe
Uist Tramping Song
Boys of Malin (if you ignore that the high Gs need to be sharps, G#)
Brother's (Jig)
Child in the Manger (Bunessan)
Cumberland Waltz
Delaney's
Keelman Ower the Land (G# that can probably be played as G or left out entirely)
Kennet's Dream
Loch Lomond
MacKinnon's Other Rant
Molly Rankin's
O'Keeffe's (slide)
Taim in Arrears
The Cock and the Hen
The Rookery

Wow thanks a lot for the advice and the list. Loch Lomond came to mind since it definitely has a high B when sung or played on a fiddle.

Come by the Hills is another beautiful slow air that just doesn't sound right without the high B.

The Rocky Mountain Fiddle Camp by the late great Gerry Holland is another fine tune.

There are probably more tunes that need the high B than tunes that don't.

We're just used to the pipes' defective versions.

Scotland the Brave for one! The first note of the 2nd part is high B.

Iím curious about this version of STB. Iíve got the tune that goes with John MacLeanís March which is similar but it goes to high B in the 3rd bar and high C in the 2nd line. Different tune or are you thinking of it in G where Iím thinking in A?

I sure wish the link to the sheet music worked on their website!

To continue talking to myself, I'll be darned if I can even find a recording of this tune as "Rocky Mountain Fiddle Camp" gives lots of YouTube hits but none of the actual tune, just of the camp. :willy:

This is a lot of great information. Thanks for the help everyone. And I had no idea about Scotland the Brave. I learned O'Keefes slide yesterday on my new smallpipes and it sounds fantastic with the high B. Also, I'm finding that in many tunes where a high A is followed or preceded by a high G, it sometimes sounds better if I insert a high B in place of the high G.

I've been having trouble locating right sheet music for Come By the Hills. That's a beautiful song.

Sorry, you'll have to transpose, but I'm sure you can manage. The tune to John MacLean's is based on Scotland the Brave but Hamish had a habit of being quite free with his adaptations of tunes - I think his song predates the tune becoming famous in the early fifties.

Thanks! I can hear The Corries singing...

Land of the kilt and sporran, Underneath there's nothing worn, How I wish the wind was warm, Scotland the Brave!

I must admit it's pretty gruesome, Walkin' about with a frozen twosome, It's all we've got we musn't lose 'em, Scotland the Brave!

Come by the Hills is a more recent song to the traditional(?) tune of Buachaill ůn …irne. You might have some more luck searching for the latter. It is typically in G-major so you will have to transpose it up a 5th (7 semi-tones) to D-major.

Best of luck,
Kevin

Hi, you can use the free application Musescore (https://musescore.org/en) to do the transposing. It also has a function to import abc files.

Ta will

Scotland the Brave for one! The first note of the 2nd part is high B.

I'm beginning to realize the truth of this!

I Vow to Thee my Country (aka Thaxted aka Jupiter) is a good high B tune. Nearer my God to Thee is another one.

Right On!. I'll be playing "Nearer, My God, To Thee" by request along with Hymne des Fraternisťs ( AKA I'm Dreaming Of Home) by request for an American Legion Centennial event this weekend. Both tunes have a high B, though in the ceremony at Vimy Ridge ( YouTube) the piper takes the B down an octave.
