No, the mounts are not ivory, they're boxwood and holly. I thought Jack's set was holly, but I might be wrong.

Chanters and pitches from the MSR contest.

Okay here's what I've got, these are my best guesses. I may have gotten a couple of them wrong and if so please correct me. In a lot of the video it was very hard to get a clear shot of the chanter bulb and sole so I did the best I could here. I used the Blair App to take an overall average for the pitches listed. The ones with question marks are my best guesses, all the others I'm 95% sure I'm right.

All I have to say about this competition is wow! What a huge field. I would not want to be one of the judges. What a great contest to listen to. My favorite performance was Alan Bevan. Nice to see and hear him playing. Great Wilson was also a treat.

There was one unknown chanter where I didn't even have a guess, the closest thing I can come up with is a modern RG Hardie but I don't have one so not 100%. I got a good screen shot of it with the foot and the bulb but I have no idea. I don't have any chanter in my collection that looks exactly like it. Sometimes when pipers get soles attached it makes it very hard to tell who made the chanter....

Jack Lee - Shepherd 483
Brian Donaldson - Donaldson Master chanter 486
Andrew Carlisle - Naill 484
Craig Sutherland - Shepherd 485
Ben Duncan - Unknown 483* (see pic below)
Ian K. MacDonald - Naill 484
Willie McCallum - McC2 480
Alastair Lee - Gandy? 484
Bruce Gandy - Gandy 485
Roddy MacLeod - RJM 485
Donald MacPhee - Naill 481
Stuart Liddel - Naill 481
Peter Hunt - Naill 483
Alan Bevan - Henderson 483
Angus MacColl - Strathmore 481
Iain Speirs - McC2? 485
Greg Wilson - Strathmore 484
Glenn Brown - Naill 483
Alex Gandy - Gandy 488
Gordon McCready - Naill 483

Yeah, I’ve been listening the MSR all morning. I’m strongly considering adopting Shepherd Mk3 for my band. Excellent pitch and basically the same spacing as a Kyo.

My band just switched off the Shepherd Mk3 in favor of the Gandy McCallums. I felt like the Shepherd had a longer reach to the LA hole than my Kyo does. The Gandy is pretty bang on the same as the Kyo, though.

I know we were planning on selling off the Shepherds. Not sure if that's happened yet or not.

Anyone know what Peter Hunt plays? One of the stand out drone configurations ( I was in the audience). Looked to be a button mount Henderson, can anyone confirm?

Shawn, the mystery pic - Ben Duncan plays the newer R.G. Hardie Blackwood chanter with a Shepherd reed.

Thanks for confirming that for me! It was driving me crazy. That was the only chanter I could think of it might be.

I was quite certain S. Liddell played a Henderson in the past, how confident is the Naill attribution?

Didn't get to see the Livestream & haven't caught up with it yet, but for many years Peter has played a button mounted set of Glen's.

Great compilation of chanters and pitches, Shawn, thanks!

I was able to squeeze in viewing a few of the performances and have to say that the sound and video is really quite good, so hat's off to all associated with the broadcasts.

I also appreciate how the solo pitches remain closer to 480 than 490...

I just listened to Peter's performance online and I would have to agree that there was something that made his drones have a little more depth or comparative presence (though all of the set-ups sounded great). Roddy's assertion that these could well be Glens (and not Hendersons) makes sense, as the only button-mount Hendersons (or Lawries for that matter -- geez, those companies were lock-step for many years!) are the chalice-tops from the 30s-50s. Wood-mounted Hendersons and Lawries are fairly common, and I've been working on a little treatise on the different wood mount types here for those who are interested.

I understand that some Glens can have quite a bit of presence, though I don't suspect Glens are commonly seen at today's top level competitions.
