Searching for tunes with a High-B note
I just purchased a set of smallpipes with an extra keyed note that plays high B. Now all I've been doing is trying to think of some tunes with that high B. All I have come up with are a few Christmas carols and religous hymns. I can't seem to think of any traditional tunes. Any ideas?
Many thanks. |

In theory any tune that has a B, can be used as a High B instead. In theory. Some tunes may work better than others, some maybe not so much. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Searching for tunes with a high B note
While I do have a smallpipe chanter with a high B key, most of these tunes I play on my John Swayne border pipe which can go up another half octave above high A; however these tunes on cursory inspection stop at the high B.
I can point you in the direction of sheet music if you need assistance. They're not all Scottish tunes (most aren't). Many of them must be transposed up from the keys the other traditions (e.g. Irish) play them in. ABC notation and the program EasyABC are your friend. Mo Ghile Mear MacArthur Road Comin' Thro' The Rye Give Us a Drink of Water (has a high C but substitution should be easy enough) Paddy Cronin's Pipemaker's Hornpipe Uist Tramping Song Boys of Malin (if you ignore that the high Gs need to be sharps, G#) Brother's (Jig) Child in the Manger (Bunessan) Cumberland Waltz Delaney's Keelman Ower the Land (G# that can probably be played as G or left out entirely) Kennet's Dream Loch Lomond MacKinnon's Other Rant Molly Rankin's O'Keeffe's (slide) Taim in Arrears The Cock and the Hen The Rookery |

Wow thanks a lot for the advice and the list. Loch Lomond came to mind since it definitely has a high B when sung or played on a fiddle.

Come by the Hills is another beautiful slow air that just doesn't sound right without the high B.

The Rocky Mountain Fiddle Camp by the late great Gerry Holland is another fine tune.

Re: Searching for tunes with a high B note
There are probably more tunes that need the high B than tunes that don't.
We're just used to the pipes' defective versions. Scotland the Brave for one! The first note of the 2nd part is high B. |
Re: Searching for tunes with a high B note
I’m curious about this version of STB. I’ve got the tune that goes with John MacLean’s March which is similar but it goes to high B in the 3rd bar and high C in the 2nd line. Different tune or are you thinking of it in G where I’m thinking in A?
