Playing in Surgical Gloves (?? :)

Greetings to All,

Well, I thought to place this in our Beer Tent... rather
than in... Technique & Instrument... or some such... :)

(Ah!! The things!!... that drive us... to drink!! :)

I have spent a fair amount of suturing time... and
examination time...in these gloves... and am not
un-handy in them.

However... today... and playing outside... and with
a mate (mainly to get him out of the house :) and
with that 6 foot distance (and that's easy to fathom)
ever between us (and at the least!!)... I did initially...
find it... to be a bit.. of a challenge!! :)

(But no worse... than winter playing... in woolen
gloves... with part of the fingers cut out. :)

Well... just something else to now practice... for
when we might be called... and have to play with
as much "protection"... as we can muster... :)

Any else out here... having given this a go??

And.. if so... with what result??

Just now curious... :)

Regards to All,

Pip01

Genuine question, why did you play wearing gloves? Just for the craic?

Greetings, Mac an t-Sealgair... and to All,

The reason is simple... and becomes the more so
every day!! :)

Presently... and for any of our foreseeable futures...
I do not... shall not... venture outside... without my
surgical gloves (on :) ... and disinfectant wipes!! :)
(And a surgical mask... when... as... appropriate.)

These are all "First Line"... of defense... and should
be worn... outside... by all.

I have done more than enough public health statistical
work... to know... that I do not wish... to become one. :)

Wishing Good Health... and Vigilance... to All,

Pip01

Donít see anything wrong with wearing surgical gloves.

For me though, I donít let anyone else handle my pipes, so Iíd not wear them for piping.

That's what I was getting at.

Did you wear a mask and put a glove over the blow stick

Ah, Green Piper... and to All,

Whilst that is a valid consideration... that... is not...
exactly... the point.

Let me put you a case... as mentioned in an earlier
Thread: ... Say... two... three... eight... ten weeks in
the future... and one is outside... playing for a funeral...
and at that "safe" distance... still and all... and perforce...
from the time anyone leaves their home... piper... plumber...
Indian Chief... there will be many, many... objects... things...
and surfaces... that will be touched... before... returning to
one's home... and it cannot be otherwise... (Sigh...)

This virus is airborne and droplet-borne... and is both quite
insidious... and relentless... in its contagion. (Just view our
present... and ever growing... case numbers.)

I can only implore... (from Middle French and Latin; "to
call on for help")... put them on before you leave... and take
them off... and thoughtfully discard... upon your return.

Concomitant with that... and in some plastic or zip-lock bag...
take along some half-dozen or so disposable disinfecting hand
wipes... for your gloves... before going back into your house...
as well as anything else that should be cleaned... such as your
steering wheel... gear shift... door handles... radio knobs... and
anything else... that may occur to you... (We all touch a lot of
things.)

There will... most probably... be yet a second surge... and quite
possibly... a third... spread over the next eight... to ten months.

Now... nobody knows!!... but... forewarned... is... forearmed...
and our hospital wards are now over flowing (and it's going to
get much... much worse) with people who thought... "Oh. It'll
be alright. I'm just going out for a little while."

Wishing for Good Health... and Vigilance... for You... and All,

Pip01

A Quick Post Script, Re Face Masks:

Holding that special office... as we do... for funerals... I shall
certainly venture out to play for any... if asked.

And... if... (or... and the more the likely... when) it comes to it...
I shall... make a discrete hole in one of my masks... for the
blowpipe.

But in so far as vectors are concerned... and to answer the
query... about my placing a glove on the blowpipe... that is
not necessary... as it is not needed for the chanter or the
drones. Just clean them well... upon your return. :)

Regards... and Best Wishes... to All,

Pip01

Nobody's touching my pipes but me. I see no benefit to wearing gloves.

Pip01,

I am not saying that you fall into this category, but I have seen many people wearing gloves on public transit -- holding the pole, opening the door, holding the thing that hand down from the ceiling to stop one from toppling over -- and then rubbing their eyes or touching their nose. Some people feel a false sense of security when donning the PPE and it is wasted on them (and is so desperately needed by front-line health care workers).

Until my museum closed from the pandemic, I took public transit to and from my house. I usually had nitrile gloves in my bag or my pocket (we use them as a barrier between us and the artefacts). I stood on the subway thinking about whether or not I should pull them out and decided not to wear them. I decided not to touch my face or eyes and sanitize and wash my hands. No point in having contagion on the gloves where it lingers just as long as on the hands. And don't get me started about people who use their sleeves or -- get this -- their scarves -- to open doors, etc.

I don't want to start any PPE wars, but there are a lot of people out there who are falsely empowered by the "protection" of the PPE and, in reality, would be better served being vigilant and washing their hands more frequently. I know you said that you sanitize the gloves, so clearly you are aware of the limitations of their use.

And please, please, please people -- don't use your cuffs, sleeves, scarves etc!

Pip01,

I certainly wasnít intending to be disparaging of your original post and I hope you donít take it that way.

AFAIK the basic surgical mask is not effective against the Coronavirus anyway. If this is the case, then maybe a false sense of security could result from wearing one. If anyone has any information to the contrary, please let me know.
