Re: Ouch - more from the video horror shop

Fair enough - but your threshold, while accurate, is a sad commentary on the state of St. Patrick's Day "public" piping. Too bad we can't clone Jack Lee...

Ouch - more from the video horror shop

I like the utter lack of musicality, the total absence of phrasing... its like a...

Excellent - though rarely taken - advice.

Re: Eye problems

Yes, see a doctor. And if things really get bad, the good news is that one of the best pipers of all time was blind.

Re: Ok, Here it is my Video.

First, your expression ain't bad - that's a real plus. You can learn technique all day long, but if you can't play a tune with expression ... well, you end up like half the pipers out there last...

Re: Chanter reed volume

If you are playing a plastic chanter reed - don't bother with blackwood. Also, if you want smaller sound, get smaller pipes (ie. small pipes)

Re: Pipes, How can you tell the Difference?

Its the piper, not the pipes.

Re: am i where i should be?

Learning music, at least at the non-proeffesional level, is about 5% native skill and 95% practice. Practice gives you the muscle memory and ear training you need to improve. Within basic parameters,...

Re: Dealing with internal band arguements

Its useful when posts like this come up. They describe the kind of childish egoism not usually found outside of sandboxes and pipe bands. Predictably, it is insecurity about one's own music...

Re: Tuning the Bagpipes

Time to avoid those yahoos. Can you imagine musicians of other instruments saying "tuning is for snobs"? They would think you were simple or had recently suffered from a head injury.

... and...

Re: Is it just me

Seems a bit extreme - you need 6-12 to "get it?" Get what? Sure, some of the fingering can be very difficult, but what else are you not getting? If you already have 6-12 tunes internally memorized...

Re: The 2/4 idiom implemented?

Don't over think this.

2/4 = One, two, One, two, etc. (you do this every time you walk - since you have two feet)

3/4 = One, two, three, One, two, three, etc.

Re: Beginner Poly Pipe Help

As long as they are manufactured in Scotland or Canada (or the States for that matter) they will be fine. As someone noted above, your reeds, and your ability to play them are what really count...

Re: Getting lockjaw through playing bagpipes

Not to state the obvious, but you were undoubtably nervous playing with the band after aq 10 year hiatus, some you clenched your jaw and suffered some muscle pain afterward. Not too tough to...

Re: Posture!

The CofP Book 2 has info on this. Stand up straight. Stick the blowstick in the middle of your mouth (its not a cigar). Chanter preferably straight up and down. Don't look like a schmuck. ...

Re: New PC and accurate tunings

Are you seriously trying to "tune" a PC to an electronic tuner? Stop doing that. Raise or lower the reed until it sounds okay to your ear. Then stop fiddling about with it and practice the tunes...

Re: Only High G out of tune with drones?

Dudes - this thread reads like a physics lesson. He doesn't need more/better battery-powered thingees. Ever see a piobarireachd player bust out a tuner while tuning on the boards - me neither.

Sure about that?

In any event. To the OP. Everyone seems to have a different experience with this.

Personally, I found learning piobaireachd both easy (in some ways) and murderously...

Re: What makes 'expressive' playing?

OP - play it like you were singing it. Not wooden, not mechanical. That's expression at a basic level.

I'll make it easy. On your way home from work today - sing "happy birthday" like you...

Re: Anyone play a wood chanter on a set of polys?

It won't make any difference. Drones sit on your shoulder and hum. So if you have a nice blackwood chanter (instead of your old poly one), you will have a minutely better sound coming from your...

How does he tune the horns...?

I would hate to see how he goes about retreiving a drone reed from that bag...

Does he use cheese for seasoning...??

This is the gift that just keeps...

Re: Trip to Scotland

General advice:

1. Do not drink with scots (men, women, or children), you will lose, badly

2. Do not play pipes near any non-hacker scottish piper, same result as #1 above

3. Do...
