Re: How to Obtain Good Chanter Reeds
There are many good reedmakers. Ideally, if you live somewhere like Scotland, you can go choose reeds. If not, Colin MacLellan once said to me to send him my pipe chanter, and he would select a...

Re: Rocket Drone Reeds Required
Interesting, I didn't know Colin McLellan used a rocket bass. He certainly has a great sound.
I agree rockets raised the bar significantly 20 years ago, no dispute there.
I guess I will...

Re: Rocket Drone Reeds Required
I would really like to know why people believe rocket reeds are so special. I too held this belief, before I got rocket reeds. I have owned and extensively played 3 sets of them, and they're good...

Re: eBay says Lawrie, what say you?
I think Grainger and Campbell too, from the profiles of the tenor and bass tops, the very chunky profle, very characteristic of G and C. and the projecting mounts too. This looks early G and C, as...

Re: Low G won't sharpen
Not sure whether anyone suggested this to you or not. The tone holes on the sides of the chanter are the ones which produce the low G. If you tape them, like any other tone hole, you will flatten...

Re: Anyone know these pipes, wood? Maker?
There is a Naill feel to them. maybe ask Martin Cowell? I am surprised people think these could be Pakistani, as they really don't have one feature that points to that! They're a beautiful set,...

Re: Anyone know these pipes, wood? Maker?
Def not Pakistani - not sure how anyone could think that. Quality turning, obviously blackwood, and many wee Naill style touches. If you were told a Naill turner did these for a mate, I would find...

Re: Your 2019 setup?
1972 Sinclair pipes, with all Canning drone reeds (brown ones). Ayrefire chanter, Shepherd chanter reed. Ross blue leather bag. Ayrefire chanter is brilliant, so easy to tune.

Re: Shorter or Longer stocks ...
Robert Reid, so I understand, always used three bass drone stocks. Yet on the pipes he made, he used regular stocks. He was an eccentric fellow.

Re: Rolled or tube staple
Not sure about this, but I noticed the shepherd reed staple is an oval shape and seems to be cut from a tube, not folded from a flat sheet as it has no seam at all

Re: Why cane drone reeds??
To be fair, synthetics could act the same way.[/QUOTE]
I don't think synthetics would react with the same volatility. They can handle changes in climate and stuff much better than cane - if you...

How to contact Dave Atherton
Mr Atherton's website doesn't have an email address (at least one I could find). Does anyone have his current business email address? I was looking to ask about a price on a set of pipes.

Re: Pipe Identification
Looks like Hardies to me, esp the projecting mounts are def hardie. any maker would have offered a flat combed option like this, it's just a cheaper option. less work than full beading and combing....
