Re: Adjusting strength on glass-fiber Rocket bass reed

I've tried springing the tongue of the bass drone reed from one of my sets and that worked well for a while but wasn't permanent. However, a hair under the tongue works just great. Sometimes the old...

Re: Hugh MacCallum on Practicing

What do your neighbours say? Tunes for an hour is one thing but scales, doublings grips etc? Quite another

Re: Poly VS ABW stocks

They were obtainable through the College of Piping. That's where I got mine. I'll look for any other info.

Re: Poly VS ABW stocks

A slightly different angle, for the physicists on here, I guess.

In my one set, I have an ABW blowstick stock and a MacMillan trap/valve. Very efficient, traps loads of moisture and in general...

Re: MCS attached to drones

I'd also be interested to see this if it's searchable.

PS Of course, any suggestion that the tea lady knows more than the judges couldn't be further from anyone's mind ....

Re: MCS attached to drones

Thanks. That's my take on it as well. Two of my three sets of pipes are ebony which is prone to cracking if it gets wet. Bottle traps on their own aren't sufficiently effective so I'm looking at...

MCS attached to drones

Some pipers say that attaching an MCS (Ross, Auchiltibuie/Highland Reeds etc) to the drones affects the sound.

Does it?

Re: 4 parted 4/4 march

Peter Mackenzie Warren is an old but good one. Jimmy Findlater and The Children as well.

Re: Matched Chanters - Relevant in 2019?

You might not be SFU etc, but at your level (been there!) it is important to eliminate as many major variables as you can. Chanters from different makers will vary and in some cases vary widely from...

Re: Need opinions on a GHB first set

As one of the replies says - you will get as many opinions as you get replies. What you want, almost always but particularly as a beginner, is the least amount of potential hassle.

As for the...

Re: A Travelling Blowpipe

I do a similar thing. Of course, the bore of the blowstick stocks won't affect tone/pitch/timbre so if there is enough wood available the narrower of the stocks could be bored out by an expert to...

Re: Chanter hemping

The chanter spinning in the stock but not coming out suggests that the hemp is not holding tightly to the chanter and the chanter is turning in the hemp. When you get it out you should replace the...

Re: Piping Books or Scottish culture books

A lovely book which is about a highland life that revolved around piping is Angus Macpherson's "A Highlander Looks Back".

That's Angus Macpherson, who, as the son of Malcolm (of the Macpherson...

Re: Rocket Reed question

Very similar story from me as well, also in v old ebony pipes (2 sets) - it doesn't worry me. The volume must still be there because there are two drones, just well in tune. I guess it all depends...

Re: A homecoming of sorts

Good luck. You never know.

Many years ago, the drum major in my band in S Africa discovered an old set of pipes in his next door neighbours garage, bought them for the equivalent of about $10...

Re: How many actually use Binneas

Bob Brown recommended them many years ago when I attended a residential workshop with him. He didn't play everything the way it is written there (neither do old Macpherson recordings as someone else...

Re: Roddy MacLeod High-A

Maybe the clue is in Shawn’s paragraph 4 - “more free but not free enough”. If you are prepared to risk the reed, try doing what Shawn describes (minute quantities of cane at a time) and see if you...

Re: Most durable synthetic bag?

It seems very old fashioned, but I have found the MacMillan Valve/Water trap (available via the College of Piping - as it was - shop) to be amazingly efficient at keeping water out of the bag, which...

Re: Chanter reed issues, going from low to high elevation

Much to the chagrin of visiting pipers, this was standard stuff in Johannesburg where I learned my piping and led a band One learned to live with it but there always was a lot of footling around...

Re: Reeding a new Naill chanter

I've been using Naill chanters since the 19080's and have never thought of them as temperamental, or particularly difficult to reed. In fact I've generally found them as easy if not easier to reed...

Re: Best Reed for CE Kron Chanter

Colin, I am using one of your reeds in my Kron and they work really well together (the reed being the "indestructible" one I told you about - it's at least 4 years old and still going strong despite...
