Re: "B" Flat Set up

Because there is a market for them. Not all pipers want to play at current band pitch. Some pipers like to play with other instruments. Playing solo, I prefer lower pitch because that's the sound...

Re: eBay says Lawrie, what say you?

I'll take that bet, Don. Look at the top bass drone, between the cord guides and bottom edge of the bell (or within the "fountain")--you see no big fat bead. no bead = no Gillanders. Thow may...

Re: eBay says Lawrie, what say you?

They sure weren't worth the $1135 final bid. I had a grand set of G&Cs on ebay, slightly before this era, where the top profile had no slope between shoulders and fountain, and they couldn't get...

Re: Drone Volume in Old Recordings

RU Brown was very prolific at recording his playing and many tracks give as good a representation as any available for the time in both studio and field. The quality of much of his pibroch recording...

Re: Bit of a 'crack' problem needing some advice please

Ship the stock to a maker and have a delrin replica made with a cocobolo ferrule. Blowpipe and chanter stocks as delrin will make your life easier, and you keep the originals if you ever choose to...

Re: Just how low can you go?

From my own chanters, a very early Hardie was stable at A448, but the synthetic drone reeds had to be opened up too much to be easily playable, even with extenders. I think the bass drone would...

Re: Drone reed recommendation for mid 70s Lawrie pipes.

I prefer the Kinnaird Evolution reeds in Lawries of that era because they tune just a bit higher than the original or Edge styles. Air efficient too. Buzzy, but fun.

Doesn't do much for the integrity of the instrument.

An Open C is not false fingering. Take it up with PM John Wilson of Edinburgh and Toronto.

Re: Bagpipes and Gaelic

I need to get some basic pronunciation down before the wagging fingers become brickbats. The artists I play on the air deserve far better than I've had time to muster. Baby steps for me.

Re: Piob High G/A vs High G/A in Piobaireachd competition

Just my preference; two finger hiG and lift the thumb for hiA in pibroch. That's how I tune and balance for the soulful sound on an old Hardie.

Hi Mike,
Glad to see you're getting all this info together. I don't know if it's relevant, but I believe Chet McNeill and Bob Johnson were in the Portland Scottish PB. I believe both of them...

Re: 2019 setup, changes?

No. 1 and only this year for pibroch:
Graham Burley ABW drones he made for me a few years ago, but he made delrin blowpipe and split chanter stocks at my request this year.
Kinnaird Edge drone...

Re: Kinnaird Edge vs Evolution

Playing Edge in two sets. No issues at all. The bridle screw needs very fine adjustments and once dialed in, I run a length of tape around the reed to make sure the screws don't vibrate out of...

Re: info on a set of Gillanders & McLeod pipes

Half mounts, even in great conditions are not in heavy demand. Very nice pipes, especially for Bb players, but I'd be surprised you get more than $800 right now. Good luck on the sale.

Re: Opinion on '90s(?) Hardies?

Hardie usually had great wood stock, even in the last days before being bought out. Reaming pipes by a competent maker is no bother, and hand reaming drone bottoms is easy. Unless you want a wee...

Re: An ABW Pipe Chanter Question

Outside fine, inside will drop and dull pitch. Not sure of recovery, so I don't.
