Re: Tenor Drone all of a sudden won't tune

I do the same, so each tenor drone reed in every pair is marked I and O for Inboard and Outboard ( or 1 & 0, for the mathematically inclined), and the tuning screws are adjusted so the drone tops...

Re: Roddy MacLeod High-A

Years ago, if someone told me the bag would make a difference in the sound, I'd have thought it superstition rather than science.
However, when I went from a Goretex bag to a Gannaway hide bag, i...

Re: Blackwood change, dulling down with time

I'm sorry you took it seriously:shrug: Poly ( Delrin, Acetyl, etc) of course need no oiling- that was the point. ( don't oil then ONLY if they're poly pipes) el gaitero's wa similarly...

I would recommend NOT oiling the bores…

…only if you're playing poly pipes.:smirk:

Re: Tenor Drone all of a sudden won't tune

Some synthetic drone reeds ( e.g. Selbies) can go for donkeys' years as long as you replace tongues and bridles before the wear out. Replacement tongues and bridles are less costly than whole...

Re: Stocks in Canmore Bag

You have the usual O-rings in he stock grooves, I would guess, which might be enough to keep it airtight, though I'd be a bit bothered by the rotation as well. If it bothers you, perhaps you could...

Re: Harmony Part for Amazing Grace

Hey,Dave- that final section of the march is the trio. Typical of marches of that era, there are three melody lines going on- the main theme, the piccolo descant, and a second counter-melody in the...

Re: High B and C natural suggestions?

Lots of tunes we pipers play have a high B when sung or played on other instruments-
Ye Banks and Braes Of Bonny Doon, Will Ye Go To Flanders/The Harp That Once through Tara's Halls, Auld Lang...

Re: The Possible Cultural Antecedents...

Add "The Bantry Girl's Lament" into the mix. Wouldn't that be a medley to put together? the chance of tune drift would be horrendous:willy:

Re: Naval Dining In

Yes, thanks, I have purchased sheet music for "Roast Beef" and have set it for pipes yesterday. Some notes needed to be "approximated" because they fall outside the available range, but as itr's not...

Re: High B and C nat suggestions ?

I'm a bit confused- did you mean a key for C natural and high B in bagpipe notation? That would be E flat and High D in concert notation. If that's the case, there are many tunes that use one or...

Re: The Possible Cultural Antecedents...

If I remember correctly, the tune to which Amazing Grace was originally set was OLNEY, which makes sense, as that was the name of Newton's parish.

Re: Naval Dining In

I respectfully disagree. While I applaud the spirit of the endeavor, I would not perform the Anthem that way. There is so much changed in the melody that it's arguably no longer the same tune....

Re: Naval Dining In

Thanks, Jim and Piper Q. If that should come up, I'll be ready to quote the appropriate sections of the National Anthem Code ( in verse, if necessary), and point out the precedent: in June 2013,...

Naval Dining In

I may be called on to play for a US Navy Dining In- something I last did over 30 years ago. Anyone have any tips on general protocol and expected tunes?

Re: The Possible Cultural Antecedents...

"Hard Times, Come again No More" is no more British than "Going Home*", but if it works on pipes ( and they both do- I play them all the time, probably will again tonight for a 9-11 memorial), then...

Re: Piping after a hernia operation

I've played them for four practices now- half-hour, 45 minutes, one hour.

It was an epigastric hernia up next to my diaphragm, repaired with mesh- no pain there at all except when the weather is...
