Re: Changing birl style
Gotcha. Don't think I'd have the same level of success with this POS poly PC I've got here though. It already sounds like crap, and I haven't tried to modify it yet. Who knows, maybe it'll sound...

Re: Changing birl style
That sounds like a great idea. I've got an old POS practice chanter that I could sacrifice in the name of a better birl. I broke the 5th metacarpal in my right hand in my 20's, and it never healed...

Re: Piper's Friend moisture control
But you can pour it (Moose valve) off. I do all the time. I like the idea of the McCallum internal valve though. That and this Piper's Friend water trap could work together ... Something to think...

Re: Piper's Friend moisture control
I like the idea. However, I would have to remove my Moose Valve, and that isn't going ot happen. Love my Moose Valve. The Moose Valve does some moisture control. Perhaps if you use a regular flapper...

Re: Chanter tuning struggle, the high notes
Your best bet is a good instructor. Someone that can be there with you, hands on, to help you. Failing that, have a read here, about reeds :) Chris really knows his stuff - but he should, he makes...

A couple of thoughts occur to me ... spurred by previous comments.

When teaching a left handed person, from the very beginning ... as teachers, are we doing them a service, or a disservice, by...

Re: Chanter tuning struggle, the high notes
Hello MariaF,
Sorry to be so late to jump in here. It seems from what you've said that the most glaring problem you have is a sharp top hand. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that your...

Airyware Tuner
Has anyone tried this tuner (https://tuner.airyware.com/)? I just downloaded it to my phone. Haven't played with it much just yet. Wondering if it's any good?
Cheers,
Scot.

Re: Gordon Walker
As a lad learning the pipes, there was talk and rumours about one of the elder statesmen/pipe teachers in our local band. A man that I had respected and looked up to. He was brought up on charges,...

Re: Chromatic bagpipe chanter
My apologies gentlemen. I had understood the question to be about a simple chromatic scale - not the full scale, all the sharps and flats included. Wow ... I just watched the video included with the...

Re: Chromatic bagpipe chanter
Maybe I'm off base here, but ... the GHB scale has two sharps, C and F. Could a person not just tape those two notes down to their natural values, and have a chromatic chanter?
Cheers,
Scot.

Re: Cutting The Tip Off Reeds
Interesting ... so it seems you're able to achieve an added note above high A (high B) by trimming a reed. When I trim a reed, it drops the pitch somewhat, makes the reed a little harder to blow, and...

Re: Cutting The Tip Off Reeds
I've had limited success. I wouldn't suggest you try clipping the tips off a reed that you depend on ... that being said it can save an otherwise dead reed. As I said, limited success - I've only...

All the advise given to you previously in this thread is rock solid. My only comment would be "ditto". Just to reiterate ... There was mention made of efficiency when considering reeds, and the fact...

Re: Practice Chanter Stand/Holder
For me, a stand of some sort wouldn't fit the bill. I'd need a stand in three or four rooms around the house, at band practice, in my pipe case, for all my different chanters (I've got too many I...

Re: Bag Cover - loose or tight?
I've found that too tight is not good. I've also found that too loose is not good. It needs to be "just right" (Goldilocks).

That's a good option I had considered also. I played a Gannaway years ago. The only thing I didn't really care for was the goose neck.

I was looking at the Lee & Sons cowhide bag too. Says it needs very little maintenance. So many choices out there.
