It's actually far better to play a PC while it's supported in some fashion. There are fingering changes where a practice chanter should actually drop or slip if done correctly—unless holding a PC out...

If you are using unwaxed hemp—I personally don’t—then you have to tie off. Waxed hemp, generally, you can get by without doing so.

Your pipe maker is correct. The end of a joint (the open end of a cylinder) is the most likely place to crush under pressure. The strongest part is the opposite end where the stock insert...
