Re: Adjusting strength on glass-fiber Rocket bass reed

Re: Favorite solo reed?

For me, the Troy-MacAllister reeds have been a go to reed in all my solo chanters. Last year, I played a Husk in a borrowed Shepherd ABW and liked it.

Once, I secured the Shepherd into my...

Adjusting strength on glass-fiber Rocket bass reed

I am fortunate to have two sets of Rocket reeds for my Robertson drones. While I donít care for the Rocket tenor reed sound, the bass sounds great.

Currently, I am using a carbon fiber Rocket...

Re: Mark Lee Rocket Drone Reeds

Evoís are my backup reeds. The Edge are more mellow, but a pain to adjust.

Re: Mark Lee Rocket Drone Reeds

I have tried moving the bridle on the glass tongued version. It does influence reed strength, but not to a great amount. At least that has been my experience. The carbon fiber bass version works...

Re: Mark Lee Rocket Drone Reeds

Rocket reeds are no longer being made, so if you want a set, youíll need to buy them used. Furthermore, they were made for specific makes of drones.

Mark Lee made details of his reeds freely...

Re: Your 2019 setup?

Over my decade of piping, I have noticed something significant about drone reed strength.

There seems to be a strength zone in which drone reeds are at their least susceptible to variations in...

Re: Pierced Pipers?

It shouldnít matter of course, but I wonder what perceptions may be for paying clientele when the piper for a funeral shows up with multiple piercings and tattoos.

Musicality should prevail.

Re: Hardie Infinity chanters

It seemed that there was a little more spread between B and low A. Not much, but enough to feel it compared with the Shepherd.

Re: Hardie Infinity chanters

I met one the other day. It was poly not ABW. Lower tone holes were a little smaller than my Shepherd. Low A seemed a little lower in comparison too. I didnít get to actually play it or hear it.

Re: Robertson bagpipes

From my experience - based on Ringoís website and my own 1930ís set is that your set certainly has the flared drone tops that were not as prominent in the 1930ís.

If theyíre anything like mine...

Re: Picking the right reed

Maybe for ridge-cut reeds ordered with a specific strength in mind. However, given that the reed material is organic, it will change over time based upon the amount of moisture it receives,...

Re: Picking the right reed

I have only really begun being so chanter reed critical in the last year. My current reed preferences are for either Troy or MacLellan, both molded reeds.

When I purchased my latest batch, I...

Re: Installing a sole to a sole-less Pipe Chanter

I have a nice Shepherd mk2 in ABW that my instructor retrofitted for a sole. He dremmelled and sanded a tenon which took him a long time. I think we dry fitted the sole using hemp to prevent it from...

I have only ever had two sets of pipes. Canít say anything bad about either of them. One was made 2009 in Scotland, the other considerably earlier also in Scotland.

My modern set hasnít been...

Re: Balancing chanter

Silly questions, but:

Are you allowing the reed to warm-up? Reed pitch changes as it warms-up.

Are you tuning with the drones going? Sometimes even with the drones corked, it can be easy to...

Re: Heat threshold for ABW Pipes?

I have played my ABWís in pretty extreme heat: 110F.

They were fine.

I suspect that the key to success in extreme conditions is to keep the bores oiled as itíll make them more resistant to...

The Soup Dragon was a favourite character of mine. It appeared in the BBC animated short called The Clangers about a group of moon living creatures.

Re: Balancing chanter

Also make sure youíre not overblowing high A, which may be easier on easier reeds. Get both Aís as close as possible, then use a little tape to fine-tune high A.

Then work on the rest of the...
