Re: 2019 setup, changes?

Experimented a couple weeks ago with home-cut plastic tongues for a spare set of SM90's, just as a lark.

Sounded great.

Sucked tons of air.

Re: Another Odd Duck Music Question...

Happens all the time, with rock songs and piping tunes, depending on which instrument I'm playing the most that day. I think it happens to a lot of musicians.

Re: Polyester thread instead of hemp = game changer!

If it works and you like it, why change to something different?

A lot of it comes down to care and maintenance.

I went back to all waxed hemp after some years using Teflon tape as well.

Re: Squealing/Double-Toning Low A

As the others have intimated, even a tiny bit of 'offness' in the fingers can do weird things with certain notes. I have to watch myself when I go from one chanter to the other (holes are spaced just...

Re: RG Hardie contact details

Good luck hearing back from them.

I sent an email via their website inquiring about their chanters.

Still waiting for an answer, almost a year later.

What an awesome way to run a business.

Re: Drone reeds "double toning"?

The middle drone reed always seems to be a tricky one, for some reason. I still have issues with mine, no matter which reed I use. I've been thinking about going back to cane for the middle one. I...

Re: On competition - is music a sport

Competition turns anything into a type of sport.

As for piping, the competition angle is invigorating in a way -- as it makes you want to improve, and adds a bit of zest to Highland Games. Without...

Re: Modern Brakes on Tempo

I keep remembering what my teacher and PM Angus Ironside used to always tell us: "Make it sing!"

Every time I play, whether practicing, or for others, that mantra keeps ringing in my ears.

Re: Opinion on '90s(?) Hardies?

The bottom bass bore on my 1981 Lawries is 9mm. I guess that is .35 inches (maybe .34 as I do not have a micrometer that measures inside dimensions) so I guess in the early 80's Lawrie at least were...

Re: Flat E on RJM Chanter

I had a flat E with a synth chanter reed and taping low A, sinking the reed, etc. helped. The E is not noticeably flat anymore. I sort of discovered the thing by accident, as Low A seemed a bit off....

Re: Opinion on '90s(?) Hardies?

I have some Wygents. They were OK reeds, but the bodies would swell from moisture and still cut off after a while. I prefer all plastic for that reason.

Re: Opinion on '90s(?) Hardies?

I was in a band in the 80's and a few of them played early 80's vintage Hardies and I do not recall anyone having problems with reeding at the time.

Not, as for modern reeds, perhaps that might be...

Re: What's new in bore oil?

I just use whatever clarinet or woodwind bore oil is available at the local music supply shop. It's the same type of oil I've used since 1984 or so, when I first started using bore oil. I haven't...

Re: Skye Boat Song - Scots Guards Error?

I learned it in 1980. The way you describe it. Obviously the Scots Guards setting, or a similar one. I don't think it's a mistake. I've heard many recordings of it on the pipes where the two notes...

Re: When The Battle's Over - 0600

I played Battle of the Somme and Bloody Fields of Flanders at 1100 local on Armistice Day, out in the driveway. I thought about hitting the local veterans' memorial but my playing wasn't up to snuff...

Re: Practice Chanters - tuned to A or Bb?

I have the high-G's on two of my three Practice Chanters taped to flatten them to a more correct pitch.

On one of them the same hank of Scotch tape has been there for probably more than a decade.

Re: Dumb Question: Drones vs. Chanter Reed Strength

For what it's worth, after some experimentation I have been able to get the middle drone to calm down. It doesn't double tone, and when I play the pipes the bag feels 'tighter', i.e. the reeds...

Re: Piper's Pinkie

I haven't had the complaints mentioned, but I have had tendonitis in my wrist before, and some over-the-counter creams seem to have helped when I had the issue; adequate hydration and probably some...

Re: Shouldn't there be threads??

I think the hemp used can make a difference. The flossy-like plastic version of hemp may not secure the reed to the seat as well as natural, waxed hemp.

But then, my only experience is with ABW...

Re: Dumb Question: Drones vs. Chanter Reed Strength

Thank you all for your kind input.

I will keep working with the drones and see if I can improve it.

I may try a different brand of drone reeds also.

I know some of it is arm steadiness......

Dumb Question: Drones vs. Chanter Reed Strength

Recently, after a two month layoff on the pipes due to an eye issue, I restarted playing again. I used a super easy reed.

Playing wise, it sounded OK. I had re-started pipes over a year ago (after...

Re: Tenor Drone all of a sudden won't tune

Very helpful post, and thread.

Would explain a few things in my own pipes.

Perhaps it's time to re-tongue an SM90 or two.... :)

Re: Ear protection recommendations for the band circle

In a pinch, small wads of cotton, wet under hot water, will protect your ears.

It usually will stay in place, and reduce the noise level. Cotton is cheap enough.

I used it religiously when in a...

Mold in bags? I suppose that is why the seasoning I use has a safe disinfectant in it. Maybe this piper's lung thing is mostly in more humid climates...
