I swap around among my Mcc2, Naill,and Shepherd Mk3 chanters.

Each is great...fantastic,.. when properly set up and played in.

It always comes down to the reed, fine tuning and ambient.

To protect wood mouthpiece tips I use a short 3/4” length of black heat shrink tube. Cheap,..does the job. Thin,..almost invisible

One reason would be starting out with a shorter billet of abw to turn the chanter top from. Making the plastic one is cheaper.

Simply put..slowly and evenly with very clean fingers to hear 11111—22222 ( onnee—twooo) then,...1111—2222,..then 111—222, then 11–22

..ultimately..1-2,1-2,1-2 played evenly at the required tempo....

Yes..I’ve also seen that during pipe refurbs with ivory mounts exposed to black light to activate a non-destructive stain remover/cleaner solution I’ve used.

..less scientific ...but real ivory is always cool to the touch... versus syn materials will be at ambient.

Good to know Dunbar uses that faux ivory with the ‘schreger line’...heretofore I only knew Shepherd to do so. Do you know from comparing is it same ad Shepherd,different,better?

I got mine in early 2017 pre wicked cold ‘parade season’ which had low 30F temps for two...
