Re: I hate my bagpipes

"There is 'magic' of a sort in everything"
Sorry to throw further fuel on the fire, but I strongly disagree with that too.

Arthur C Clarke's third law states "Any sufficiently advanced technology...

Re: I hate my bagpipes

Ok, I may have misread (or perhaps over-interpreted) it. I took "there is some element of magic in wood instruments" coupled with "pipes being no exception" to mean there is some unquantifiable...

Re: I hate my bagpipes

1 - "There is some element of magic in wood instruments of all types; pipes being no exception."
2 - "There's a potentially vast gulf between using an old set as a basis for your work, and making...

Re: PM on the rampage!

I’d add option H : Ask the PS or lead tip to ask the PM if the stress of leadership might be too much for him
Had a PM do everything short of breaking the chanter over his leg at a practice. Then...

Re: Radical reed shaving

My first thought when I saw the title here was "brazilian?"
I need help.

My second thought was; if you're having to radically shave reeds, you're probably buying the wrong reeds.

Re: Forum activity levels

I was going trough some old hand written manuscripts (save that for another anecdote) and found a cutting from an early 20th century Oban Times letters page in which the writer was getting very wound...

Re: Forum activity levels

Maybe all the big controversies have been addressed, the big questions answered, and there's very little new left to talk about.
Job done?

Re: How many sets do you 'run' at a time?

I can just about understand having one really good main set for comps / most gigs, plus a second set for bad weather gigs/gigs when significant quantities of drink may be taken/emergency backup. But...

Re: Rehearsal "activities"

Here’s what doesn’t work. This is / was a real band (I'm no longer a member, so it may have changed).
8:00pm - Pipers start to arrive, have a chat, start to assemble pipes, one or two might start...

Re: Why is it still ivory that's No.1?

It's odd that we don't refer to man made mounts for what they are. Why do we say "imitation ivory" and not plastic, man-made, or white delrin / celluloid / phenolic resin?
I get that 'plastic'...

Re: Gordon Walker

"what’s it got to do with bagpiping"
By that measure Harvey Weinstein's behaviour had nothing to do with the movie industry.
GW's piping reputation was what got him the job as a teacher, put him in...

Re: Fitting cane drone reeds according to bore size

One of my regrets is that many years ago I threw out my grandfather's two biscuit tins full of old drone reeds. Most of those very old reeds were much wider than the ones you get today, and with only...

Re: Picking the right reed

I found that the "number of bars" process on Donald Macphee's website https://macpheereeds.com/products/macphee-pipe-chanter-reeds
worked really well as a way of getting reeds specific to my...

I hate my bagpipes

Has anyone ever bought a set of pipes (other than those from Pakistan) that have been a complete nightmare and that you've really hated?
Every time there's thread asking for opinions on a particular...

Re: Naill Re-bore?

Madpiper13, if no-one had ever told you that tenor drones sound best 'on the hemp line', would you have been happy with the sound of your David Nialls?
Personally I think it's a non-issue. At best...

Re: Recycling a broken joint

Do you fish? If so, fill it with lead shot, seal the ends, and use it as an angler's priest.

Watched the video. Congratulations on your fairness, sheer bloody-mindedness for trying them 'as supplied', and for managing to keep a straight face through the whole process. :thumb:

Re: A hollow victory and a question

This is probably the wrong place to ask this question. We're all too familiar with pipe music. Whatever you choose, try to run it past a non-piper before the comp to see if it's something they find...

Re: Photo: what bands?

Oo a puzzle. We likes puzzles precious. Is it tricksy?

Clues other than the pipers attire: there seem to be tram lines down the street. Only Scottish city with trams is Edinburgh, but they were...

Re: Chanter bias?

Thoughts?
You don't say what the background of the workshop leader is. Is this someone who has actually earned the right to pass comments like that? What have they done / won. Might they just be a...

Re: Pakistani Bagpipe Challenge

Does anyone else think it would be better to combine this thread and "For the piper who has everything - a Chair! " and set a challenge to turn Pakistani bagpipes into chairs? :thumb:

Re: Sharpness War

Regarding soloist at high pitch, I don't get either why or how.
These days I just play for my own pleasure, so the chanter is at whatever pitch requires least tape, and the drones are set to that....

Second rule of Pipe Band : if in doubt, blame the drummers.

Solo piper's pitch is creeping up too. Discuss ?:(

Re: Origin of 'The Keel Row'?

Robert, it's the other way round.
The man who dies takes the high road (heaven), gets to Scotland first, but will never see his true love again on the banks of Loch Lomond. His pal survives and...
