Re: Your own funeral

I definitely want piper friends, and pipes at my memorial service.

I want to be cremated, but I still want a casket at the memorial. And in it, I want somebody to put an MP3 player of some sort,...

Re: Sharpness War

I don't think chanter pitch creeping up is about the drones at all. I think it's about clarity. Especially in a band setting.

Re: Bruce Gandy's Piob. at the Glenfiddich

I also thought Bruce's tune was splendid. But he made reference to an error elsewhere, and I'm guessing that's what took him out. At that level one little hiccup can do the trick. GREAT contest...

Re: Glenfiddich Livestream?

I've hear that they are, but no sign of it yet on their web page.

Re: Cold weather playing

If the temperature gets down into the lower 30s F or below, things can go south on you pretty quickly. Simple physics. If warm, moist air comes into contact with cold, dry air it condenses. And...

Re: Bruce Gandy chanter - reviews?

I have a blackwood Gandy chanter that I like very much. I play a G1 Platinum Easy+ reed in it to excellent effect. I play that chanter with my Stephen Anderson drones. They are a very smooth,...

Re: What is your favorite tune?

If you just do a Google search on The Curlew bagpipe music and click the Images tab, several settings pop up.

Re: What is your favorite tune?

I am particularly fond of The Highland Wedding, and also the hornpipe, Donald MacLeod. The Curlew is right up there too.

Re: Unusual bag/cord covers?

I'll second the recommendation for Hastings. I have several. All excellent.

Re: Well-known pipers who play easy reeds?

We're all unusually large and strong here..... but Jimmy and I both play embarrassingly easy reeds in solo and band chanters. We get great volume, tone, and balance, The only difference I can see...

Re: Leading a procession

Walk in time to the music you're playing and take small steps. pretend drummers are following you and you know they are weighed down.

Re: What is the longest time you have played without stopping?

In Bordeaux, France in 2001 I stood in the Plaza of St. Catherine and played non-stop for an hour-and-a-half without stopping between tunes, except maybe to spot tune the drones a bit. Never let the...

Re: Gaelic learners

Hey Waldo,

The word, SITH . What's your take on pronunciation? The SI seems it should be like SH in English, with the I making a long E sound. What's throwing me it the TH. Shouldn't that...

I just bought a pair of the Avriel orthopedic Gillies from mykiltmaker.com and they are extremely comfortable so far, and the shiniest shoes I have ever seen out of the box, short of Corfam dress...

Re: Highland pipes in G

That's a pleasant sound, Patrick. It does sound more like a Medieval pipe of some sort, or the smallpipe setting on the Degerpipe (which is what I prefer when I practice with it).

I've also...

Re: Bagpipe camp in Midwest?

If you would care to come south, Batesville Arkansas has the Lyon College Summer School in June. Willie McCallum will be back again this year.

If you're interested, shoot me a note for details.

Probably a good, solid set when properly hemped and reeded.

Re: New EUSPBA grade 5 for solos

MANY games across the country have offered an unsanctioned Grade 5 competition on pipes for at least the over-twenty years I've been involved in piping. It's not lowering the bar at all. It's...

Re: Playing with a band

I'm with Pppiper. The Pm's foot, and play on the beat. If you try to follow the PM's fingers, you will be slightly behind. Keep the PM's fingers in view, but cue on the foot.

Re: Thread for late-comers to piping?

I don't know if there is a single thread, but there is a lot of discussion on that topic.

I started playing at 39, now over 22 years ago.

What you get out of it depends largely on what you...

Re: Selfies in old Hardies ?

I play an old Hardie from about that same period as my band pipe. No problem with Selbie tenors. The bass does tune low on the pin, but same with an Ezeedrone.

I heard that they are assessing the damage.

Graham Brown, you may have heard, lost everything. There is a go-fund-me online page set up to assist him.

Re: Gaffer Tuning tape altenative

Yep. VERY little residue and easily removed. Sticks great. The ONLY time it's a problem is if the surface is wet when you try to put it on. I've been using it for about 19 years.
