Re: Experience with keys on an SSP chanter?

John Liestman's book is available as a download in exchange for a donation to charity.
Here's a cut-and-paste of the details:
"The Northumbrian Smallpipes Tutor by John Liestman is now available...

Re: Pipers Gathering, Aug 1921 Litchfield,CT

Hope you all have a good weekend. Anita and I have very happy memories of our three visits, but suddenly it's about ten years since we were there! Maybe we'll get back there sometime, but it's a long...

Re: NSP Makers?

Our waiting list had grown to almost two years, and at that length it's almost impossible to predict a delivery date with any accuracy, at least it is for us.
We also felt it was putting us under a...

Re: NSP Reed

I'm going to be at Manchester Pipers' Day next Saturday, doing fettling/maintenance all day. Could take a look then if you can get over. Sounds like the chanter reed is dead and/or leaking key pads....

Re: NSP chanter tenon measurements

Length 5/8", width to fit a 9/16" stock. If yours is 3/4 long and the hole spacings are standard, you might have a problem getting the reed in the right place.
Take a look here:...

Re: Best source for lowlands smallpipes sheet music, from before the gap?

There's a small typo in the link above- find the cover picture and link to the index here:

http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/musicfiles/rook/

There's a detailed drawing of NSP, correct for the...

Re: Contra-Bass Borderpipe/SSP

Back in about 1978 I made a NSP D set with a folded drone. This was half concealed in the drone stock in the same way as many Pastoral sets (which I had never heard of at the time).
The bends were...

Re: Original Lowland pipe chanters

Just another bit of info.- this chanter is included in Colin Ross's article in the 2007 NPS magazine- it's his example four on p44- and he shows that it is designed to play a sharp high G unlike the...

Re: Original Lowland pipe chanters

No, not in my opinion. The first photo has a 12" ruler alongside the set showing the chanter to be about 14" long. A pastoral chanter is about 20" with a much shallower bore taper and very small tone...

Re: Original Lowland pipe chanters

This set has several interesting features. The low G key is instead of the usual finger hole and reinforces the fact that these instruments were played with diverse fingerings. Presumably the...

Anita has a collection of photos of the Chantry Museum sets here:

Each subset is one instrument, numbered by the museum...

Re: Burleigh NSP business for sale

Sorry, but that's wide of the mark.Colin Ross is still making pipes. I was largely taught by Colin (and also by Maurice Sterrie). Colin also taught Philip Gruar, and Julia and Barry Say.
The line is...

Re: SSP and Guitar

There are chords in the LBPS 'Session Tunes' book. These are for pipes in A, transposition to D should not be a problem- A becomes D etc. If you don't want work out the D chords, your guitarist could...

Re: Adjusting a Border Pipe Chanter Reed

Well, I'm not Nate, but I use the same system- can't imagine any other way of doing it. A sheet metal bridle as per UP would be too strong and clunky.

Took a blood sample on the twisted ends...

Re: Custom made SSP and BP bags request

Jackie Boyce's bags are excellent, any size/shape- he has a long list of various pipemakers' sizes on the website- I think it's on the prices page.

Re: NSP Tuition DVD

I was thinking of doing some short instruction videos for NSP, to put on YouTube. Anita has new camera, so she's looking for an excuse to use it!
So, what sort of topics would be useful?

Re: My First Reed!

Sounds like you've scraped it a little too much, hence the need to reduce the length. That doesn't mean it isn't a perfectly good playable reed, it certainly looks fine!

Glad to see you're...

Re: 18th Century Scottish Smallpipes

The dimensions are very similar to a keyless Northumbrian pipe chanter. However, of course a NSP reed would be quickly destroyed by moisture.

Re: Trimming NSP reed?

That's because they are! We use the same reeds for all NSP except G and all SSP.
Don't forget, the modern SSP were derived from NSP.
