Re: Interest in a comprehensive piping wiki?

I actually started such a thing, on what used to be Wikia:

https://bagpipes.fandom.com/wiki/Bagpipes

I am afraid inertia somewhat took over, and it never got very far, but I'd encourage...

Re: Would you purchase your Blair electronic chanter again?

I agree getting the hole sensitivity right is a chore, and I don't think the Blair chanter has completely nailed the electronic instrument.

Part of it is simply playing technique, and with a...

Re: An interesting piece of data

Yes, I forget what period this is over but obviously it's only a sample.

I do agree that the bulge in the 30/40is bracket is obviously due at least in part to mums Googling for their...

Re: Help in identifying pipes. Maker? Wood?

Your enthusiasm for using terms considered racist is your own business, but I would appreciate it if you did not assume that we all share similar feelings.

Re: Tin Whistle to Play With GHB

What Patrick said. What your friend wants to do is play GHB tunes, and to that end he should buy a bog standard D whistle and learn to play it from one of the many excellent tutors available.

Re: The "CoP Tutor" for Snare Drum?

The D2 book, "In Your Hands" is I think the most complete book available, though I would recommend backing it up with some form of instruction. The pipebanddrummer.com site is also a fantastic...

Re: Help in identifying pipes. Maker? Wood?

The term "Paki" has long been used and understood as a racial epithet in certain regions, particularly the UK, and so those of us who care about such things have stopped using it to describe...

Re: A hollow victory and a question

Ceol mor *can* be fine for a general audience, but the presentation and the mood has to be right. Bar full of rugby fans: do not ceol mor. Black tie dinner of cultured types: ceol mor may go very...

Re: Dominant Naill drones - which reeds to use?

Like Roddy, I am rather baffled and would like to understand what's going on before trying to solve a problem I don't understand.
A recording might be helpful.

Re: Help in identifying pipes. Maker? Wood?

They don't do what we do, and to compare it is unfair and meaningless, despite the shared family tree making us think we can.

Get a pair of pliers and use them to squeeze the bridle from the outside edges. Do it while looking at the lips if the reed. Squeeze enough to see the smallest possible visible movement, then stop...

Re: This is driving me nuts - mouth-blown pitch vs. pipe-blown pitch

Blow one reed for a week, don't worry about the pitch, then after a week set it to your target pitch.

Cronan's Reel/Roddy MacDonald's Fancy

It certainly is a tradition that exists.

One answer I suppose is to be good enough that you don't have to worry about being unable to play it well at the drop of a hat. But at the end of...

Re: C natural Key or Back hole on chanter which is better?

Yes - resetting a leaf spring is a fairly standard woodwind repair and any maker of keyed things should be able to do it fairly easily.

Re: C natural Key or Back hole on chanter which is better?

As far as back hole placement goes, it certainly isn't great ergonomics, especially if you do not have a super relaxed hold. I suspect an angled hole could help a bit.

Re: So,..what makes it a Bb reed vs a standard reed?

Whatever difference there is will be small: perhaps a millimetre on the staple, and a very slightly more gentle angle on the taper.

I must admit I've always just shoved a standard reed into...
