Re: Polished drone bores?

Perhaps the whole polish it to a mirror marketing scheme is an effect to help a subpar bore configurations sound brighter in tone.... at least for a little while. You see, there is no constant here...

Re: "New" Husk Reeds

I spoke with Shawn for several hours last week. He is working to get on the road to recovery. I'm sure he will need some patience from those of us that play his reeds.

Until he can recover and...

Re: Rocket Reed question

If you are able to make one tenor disappear into the other while tuning you have something exceptional on your hands. If you can make the bass and tenors disappear into each other and form one sound,...

Re: An ABW Pipe Chanter Question

Oh man! 5mm is going to be way too big. 4.31mm is already pushing the limits. I think the maker wasn't wanting to give you the exact throat size.
Is the chanter unstable and getting higher in pitch...

Re: Wood ID

The grain on your set was probably filled with a finish and then it appears they put black shoe polish or some kind of black finish over it. That is why it looks smoother.

Re: An ABW Pipe Chanter Question

My late 70's/80's ABW Naill is one of the straightest chanters I have put on the lathe. Not perfectly straight but close.

I once tested the straightness of a number of poly and ABW chanters of...

Re: An ABW Pipe Chanter Question

I would imagine that a symphonic woodwind would be designed around the idea that it will be regularly oiled, highland pipe chanters are not.
Many years ago I found out the hard way why you shouldn't...

Re: Favorite blowstick? And worth it to repair a blowstick?

Okay, interesting. If the blowpipe fits you well and you want to keep a matching set, then have it lined and repaired. If I saw a picture of it I could give you an idea of the severity of the repair....

Re: Favorite blowstick? And worth it to repair a blowstick?

For the original poster: Did you have indoor heating running with the pipes left out of their case when the pipes cracked?
If so, that would the culprit. Keep an eye on the rest of the set.

Re: How to deal with Flat Cs

Are you mouth blowing the chanters when you are checking the tuning? I have found that the more you mouth blow a reed the crazer it gets do to the above stated moisture content. It ended up going...

Re: Questions regarding having pipes made

To the original poster of this thread (Benn The Bad Piper), like others on this thread have stated, don't do a remount unless you have to. The pipes are made to the metal, not the metal to the pipes....

Re: MG White Mambas Drone Reeds

These White Mamba reeds, from the outside, appear to be more or less a close copy of the drone reeds "All-Fiber Ridgeway Mk2" developed by Jean Allioux in 2005. I wonder of he played a role in...

Re: "New" Husk Reeds

The new version of Shawn's reeds are phenomenal. They are as consistent as you will find. They work in virtually every chanter I put them in.

I only use two brands of chanter reeds, Husk and...

Re: Practice Chanter Reeds-no fuss

I like the Abbott practice chanter reeds. You can sand them down to suit the strength needed. I have one that I put more than a decade on.... How many students do you have now?

Re: Mexican Royal Ebony (Katalox) GHP pipes

I've got just what the doctor ordered 😁 No seriously however, it is a nice wood for tone. You would have to get really light pink colored pieces because they will darken as stated earlier in this...

Re: Big Bad Drone

The bass mid and top are very different in bore size. You really need both with the tuning chamber top for effect with modern pipes. You could most certainly go with a one piece bass top and mid, but...

Re: Best lathe for making border pipes and GHB repairs

I own several wood lathes and a metal lathe. The only way I would ever use a metal lathe for bagpipe making is if I hired someone who didn't know how to hand turn and sharpen tools, and at that I...

Re: Reaching out to those who have only been on the chanter ready for first pipes

No way man, we aren't going down that road. Everyone on here knows that Naill Co. produces an excellent bagpipe.

After much debate and reviewing the upper bore diameters and their relationships,...

Right..... And I mean that in the most sarcastic way possible.

Okay fellas, let's get a few things strait here. First and foremost let's not talk to Michael this way. He is a young piper, I have...

Ahhhhhhh Ringo! I have been itching to comment on your post ever since I saw it!

To start, I will just say this. The wood/substrate a pipe or chanter is made from absolutely makes a difference on...
